Day 047
My day was pretty bittersweet. The sweet part: I went to my first day for volunteering at the Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) shelter. It was orientation, so we learned about the rules and regulations and the overall operations of the place. It's a no-kill shelter. They currently hold like 100 dogs and 40 or 50 cats, and they usually get about 400 dogs and cats a year. Turnover rate is great, a lot of animals get adopted. We were required to walk a dog, and I picked Daisy, a 7-year old german shepherd and corgi mix. She was so sweet! And really fat. And really curious about everything. All the other dogs in that particular building were all really hyper and almost kinda scary cuz they just kept barking their asses off at the unfamiliar faces, but when Daisy and I made eye contact her ears perked up and just looked so sweet and cute that I picked her to walk. :) I had to use a harness and double-leash her, though, because apparently she's a flight risk. But she stayed by my side the whole walk. She was so fun to be with, so I chilled with her for like 2 miles' worth of trails. Not so fun: she shat twice in a ten-minute span.
Right afterwards, I headed home then went to Tom's house with my mom. Stopped by McDonald's to buy a big mac meal for my uncle. He loves big macs. This old lady tried stealing my meal when it was up at the counter though, and I just stood right behind her, and she turned around and had the guiltiest look on her face and was like, "Oh, this is yours right? Here you go!" then nervously laughed and walked away. =___=
Got to Tom's house and was greeted by my favorite puppy, TJ! I might be biased, but he's the cutest jindo I've ever seen. Big brown eyes and shiny white fur. He's a very loving dog, and I'm glad Tom has him for company; he's very loyal and playful. TJ stands for Tom Junior.
So, the bitter part: my uncle couldn't eat the big mac meal I got for him because he's getting surgery the next day. He couldn't eat anything, and he could only drink Splenda. He's lost 27 pounds in the past month, and now he's only 92 pounds. 76 years old and diagnosed with esophageal cancer in Stage IV. My uncle honestly looks a lot like my aunt Jannie when she was ill (his older sister), who also passed away in 2005 from cancer (brain tumors). I'm wondering if it's got anything to do with Agent Orange... I haven't talked to my dad in a really long time, and he doesn't know about either of their conditions... I would tell him, but I'm really afraid, considering that when I told him about aunt Jannie, he completely blew up at me for seeing the family. My uncle told me later, after I told him about my dad's reaction, that my dad displayed the same hostility when Jannie tried to call him to reconcile their differences before she passed away. He told me a long time ago to not see his side of the family--including my own brother, who I only got to meet in 2009 behind his back (my brother is 20 years older than me, so he was already living an independent life by the time I was a toddler). My dad hasn't seen his family in about 20 years, I'd say, and when Jannie called him in her final hours, he only got angry at her for 'disrespecting his wishes' to remain separated from the family, and then hung up on her. How mad could he really have been at me or Aunt Jannie, though, if he visits her grave to this day?
