Spirited Away

I rewatched this anime at least 6 years after my last rewatch, and it was as beautiful as ever. I don’t know if it’s a side-effect of being a quarter-century-old, but everything seemed cuter than it was when I last watched it at 19. Chihiro crying while stuffing her mouth with the ricecakes, Boh as a mouse, even the irritating mini Yubaba-bird-as-a-fly. So. Adorable. When they ran that spinning wheel like it was an exercise wheel, when mouse Boh touched the slug remnants, etc.

But what really took the cake was when my brother and his girlfriend got home. My brother had never seen the movie, and when he first came in, he had loads of questions: Is he (Kamaji) a monster? Why does he have so many legs? What is that (the dragon that was Haku)? What are those things (the soot balls)? Why is her (Yubaba’s) nose so big? It was pretty annoying but at times really funny, like when the fake Boh turned back into the three ugly men-heads, and he said, “Huh?” I laughed so much at that. And he was very curious about Zenibah, and super grossed out with No-Face, and he kept asking and asking, so I gave him the low-down on what happened previously. I remember feeling very smug when he saw the lantern with the foot (which reminded me forcibly of Pixar’s lamp) and said it was cool. And then he said that he read the synopsis of the movie but he still didn’t get it HAHA.

In any case, I intend to rewatch/ watch the other Hayao Miyazaki films henceforth!
