07/24/15: Design Lab, Karaoke, and Bowling
07/24/15: Design Lab, Karaoke, and Bowling
Today, we’re back in the classroom at Thammasat University, after being away for two weeks. We had a half day Design Lab class taught by Ajarn Praewa. This class focused on developing the insights that we got from our fieldworks and getting started on improving our solution to our design challenge. My group came up with three insights. The first one we came up with was the root problems, seeing how many problems such as the ongoing conflicts and the lack of documentation prevent displaced Burmese from accessing government’s services in both countries. The second insight we came up with was regarding the communication, seeing how language and cultural barriers make it difficult for communication between Burmese patients and providers and make displaced Burmese feel uncomfortable about using Thai services. The last insight we came up with was regarding the health education, seeing how training future health workers in the community could provide more access to health care. Based on these insights, we came up with two questions that we hoped would help guide us to develop our solution. One of the questions was “how might we reduce language and cultural barriers so that displaced Burmese feel less uncomfortable about using Thai services?” Another question was “how might we recruit and train future health workers in the community so that they can provide more access to health care and education on personal health to the community?” As of now, our solution focused on the latter question, which is to create a program that recruit health workers that are willing to go back to their community and establish a small clinic (similar to the health post that we visited) so that everyone in the community can have access to basic healthcare and health education.
In the evening, my dad and sister came to pick me up to go to a mall. We had ice creams at Swensen’s before my sister and I got into a karaoke box and sang a few songs. Afterwards, we went bowling! It was a really nice way to end a Friday night.
