January 1, 1952: The party's over . . . After all the champagne had been drunk and the confetti swept away, New York took a breather, getting off to a quiet start to 1952. Looking south from 45th Street, we can see the fog creeping into Times Square, which just hours before had been bursting with New Year’s brouhaha. It had been the first truly raucous celebration there since before World War II.
