Brick Club 1.2.5 “Tranquility”
A very short chapter that mostly leaves me with questions about Hugo’s vague action-descriptions. What is the “gesture” Valjean makes? I always assume it’s a fist in the air or some other threatening move, but it’s so vague. “Without turning his head or looking behind him, went toward his room”--is that Myriel who isn’t turning or Valjean? (Hugo’s confusing use of pronouns and punctuation is very frustrating.) What’s this blowing out candles with his nostril “as convicts do”? Was that actually a thing? I can’t imagine it being more effective than blowing it out with your mouth. Do you plug one nostril like you’re snot-rocketing and then blow the candle out or what?
Two smaller things I think are important to point out in this chapter: One, that Myriel gives Valjean one of the candlesticks as they walk to the alcove. Again, they are two equals. Two, that when Valjean asks “Have you thought I might be a murderer,” it feels very similar to when he dismisses the information on his passport about where he’s from etc. Again, he’s reducing himself to his criminal record and to assumptions people have made about him or that have been drilled into his head by life in prison.
Also, the Bishop walking in the garden “surrendering mind and soul to a dreamy contemplation of these grand and mysterious works that God shows at night to eyes still open” part is an interesting passage, because a sentence later, Valjean is sound asleep. I feel like this is a continuation of all the little aspects of Valjean’s lack of religion: his “that is what a bishop is” monologue, his not bowing when the bishop blesses him, the later chapters’ discussion of his lack of faith in prison. The bishop is in the garden with his eyes open to god, and Valjean is deeply (exhaustedly) asleep.
“A moment later he was walking in the garden, surrendering mind and soul to a dreamy contemplation of these grand and mysterious works that God shows at night to eyes still open.
As to the man, he was so completely exhausted that he did not even avail himself of the clean white sheets; he blew out the candle with his nostril, as convicts do, collapsed onto the bed, fully dressed, and into a sound sleep.”

“The bishop left his guest in the alcove, in front of a clean white bed. The man placed the candlestick on a small table.
“Now,” said the bishop, “a good night’s sleep to you. Tomorrow morning, before you go, you’ll drink a cup of warm milk from our cows.”
“Thank you Monsieur l’Abbé,” said the man.
Scarcely had he pronounced these words of peace, when suddenly he made a strange gesture that would have horrified the two women of the house. Even now it is hard for us to understand what impulse he obeyed at that moment. Did he intend to give a warning or threat? Or was he simply obeying a sort of instinctive impulse, obscure even to himself?”
“Are we in trouble?”
