...it can’t be sunset at 4:30 in Paris in August, can it? The sun doesn’t even set that early in London in December! Unless by setting he just means that it has passed its apex and is now heading back down towards the horizon.

We’re pretty sparse in lighting symbolism here, just further emphasizing what a lovely day it’s been. The window is struck by a perfect sunbeam. The Champs Elysees are filled with sunshine. Things are Good and Bright in Paris. Although it’s also full of Sunlight and Dust, which reads to me as one of those particular details that people from Paris nod at and go, “yep, that’s Paris all right.” As I am deeply, deeply not Parisian*, it does not elicit the same reaction in me, but it’s a fun image.

And then we get the Cat Metaphor. @lawisnotmocked has a really great cat symbolism post here (read the replies for the full details). And the people of Paris here are being described as very cat-like: lazy, indolent, prone to indulging in pleasures, and also 1000% not something you want to back into a corner. Also, like, a cat, “his hair bristles with epic rage,” a not quite literal but absolutely delightful translation of “ses cheveux pleins de colère sont épiques."

Also I love the image of Parisians becoming Gods when necessary. And he honestly kind of follows through with this, when we meet his later Embodiments of Paris in people like Bahorel and Gavroche.

But this chapter is mostly just an excuse for Hugo to rant in the notes about a thing he read that makes him mad. And, as someone who also leaves long rants in the notes of things that I read (including things by Victor Hugo), I can’t help but sympathize. I can only imagine what Hugo’s ebook notes would look like, were he given access to such technology.

*Every time I read this book, I go, “Yeah, Paris! Paris is awesome!” and then every time I have to actually be in Paris I’m like, “Oh yeah. I kind of hate Paris.” I’m from Marseille; it’s basically genetic.
