The friday night football game with the band got cancelled by torrential downpour, lightning and thunder. We knew it would but i was happy to go anyways, because f yeah band and f yeah rain. Middle of 1st quarter storm picks up, so we march off and we’re packin up. I helped pack the uhaul then ran to the bus and hopped on, before remembering this was the other school’s bus. I turned around and raaan to oUr bus, proceeded to dry off and talk amongst my band. Good 5m later i realize i fuckin dropped my phone otw, and theres flood warnings, ditches and the ground are filled and soaked with water. After retracing the quarter mile from the bus to the uhaul to the stands twice i let defeat set in and stand in the uhaul with sam, darla and blank. Time passed and i reminded myself attachment to material objects is weakness and futile, until i think to check the other team’s bus, where my fuckin phone was chillin the whole time at the top of the stairs. Somehow, miraculously, none of darla or seans calls to my phone went through while i looked for it except one call, which went through right when i got to the other team’s bus. Idk if i believe in fate, the call wasnt even imperative to me finding it, but it’s pretty fuckin rad that one in like twenty calls went through right as i found it. Starin out into the rain under the protection of the uhaul i thought how damn cool it is and how lucky i am. I went from the shock and denial of irreversible loss out of my control, to the sheer joy of finding my shit, laughing at how i could return to the petty, delicate attachment of tangible things, and laughing and jumping around and staring into the heavy waves of drops falling as far as i could see into the dark or into the stadium lights. I’m lucky.
