So rather than worry about ‘oh, did I already post this or reblog this before?’ I’m just going to start dumping art out as I please, and in no particular order. The good news is that it’s been four years since I left Tumblr, so I now have even more OCs and even more art than ever before to share. In short, y’all gon’ be eatin’ good goin’ forward. But to start us off with, let’s start with a familiar face in 10-C/Ten.

Well, they tried... Science in Star Trek: Discovery, Season 4

Hydrocarbon.

A substance composed of only carbon and hydrogen.

Basically, purified petroleum products.

That is what the 10-C use to communicate?

Maybe the 10-C evolved in a radically different way and have some mechanism we can’t quite understand for using “lights” to map out an “alphabet” on the molecules, but hydrocarbon “pheromones” should not be able to elicit emotional responses in humans. Here’s why:

1. Pheromones are specific to a certain species. Humans are not affected by insect pheromones, for example, because we do not have the protein receptors to recognize the molecules. A receptor for the hydrocarbons used by the 10-C would have to contain some huge hydrophobic pocket. In the aqueous environment of the body, such a hydrophobic pocket would be hidden deep inside a protein. I don’t see how it could be induced to open up.

2. The 10-C hydrocarbons are huge! They won’t penetrate the stratum corneum. Enough said.

If they just made it be “proteins” instead of hydrocarbons, then we’d get somewhere!* I don’t know, I think the Star Trek writers are already running out of jet fuel, and it’s only season 4.

*Well, actually, proteins are too big to penetrate the stratum corneum too... Ugh, small molecules would do for an alphabet! I can’t do math, but I’m sure that even a 15-20 atom molecule would generate millions of combinations for an alphabet, then if you have over a dozen different ones...
