I watched Taiso Samurai episode 1 pogggggchamp

So this is our main boy, a gymnast trying to retire due to an injured shoulder who’s big emotional decision at the end is to not retire actually because he loves his family and his daughter loves watching him do gymnastics. I quite like the dude! It’s cool seeing a dad protagonist in anime whose character is more than just being a dad. Unfortunately his name is Jotaro so I literally can’t not think about JoJo when his name is said.

This is Rei, his bundle of joy daughter who is absolutely my favourite character already, fuck she’s so cute. I appreciate that dad isn’t solely defined by being dad, so I hope daughter gets to be more than just daughter as well.

This is the massive fucking bird they own as a pet that they apparently got from South America! What the fuck! Is this a shoebill? What the fuck is it doing as a Japanese household pet? Why can it talk?

So anyway, I quite liked this first episode. I think, a down to earth sports narrative about an athlete dad coming to terms with his retirement is something that would’ve been pretty cool to watch. But seeing that be flipped over its head with the introduction of a ninja running away from men in black so he can avoid deportation, turning this show from what could’ve been a pretty serious show into a fairly silly one, I am honestly about it. OP shows off plenty of good character and fairly silly character designs and coupled with the weird fuckin bird I think a sort of comedic tone works fine. I’m about it, it was fun to watch.

Cool show, I’mma keep watching.
