#100DaysOfLearning #Day2 Did you think we were done with cryptid snails? We’re not. The Sarmatian Sea Snail is said to lurk about the Baltic Sea, which Ptolemy referred to as the Sarmatian Ocean. While it is nowhere near Lou Carcolh’s size, it is still large for a mollusc with a shell the size of a wine barrel. It also possesses a cat’s face and paws, as well as distinctive antlers that end in pearls. Mostly harmless, the snails blood and meat were believed to cure leprosy. #100daysoflearning #day1 #guesswhosback The Romans were somewhat notorious for being a bit mercenary when it came to religion (and come to think of it, so were the Mongols). If a deity could be shown to be powerful and victorious, they would be incorporated into the Roman pantheon. One of the more notable of these deities was Cybele, who the Romans called Magna Mater or Great Mother. When the Romans got embroiled in the Punic Wars with Carthage and Hannibal, a prophecy was made that only Cybele could bring the Romans victory, so they took the meteorite that was Cybele's sacred stone and transported it from Turkey to Rome. Within a year, Hannibal had to lift his siege on Rome, and another year later the war ended in Roman victory. For the rest of the Republican era, Cybele was seen as a foreign, eastern goddess, but it is very interesting to see how Virgil's Aeneid works to incorporate Cybele into Rome's Trojan roots in the early Imperial era. While there are many overt references to Cybele, Virgil cleverly hides more subtle ones using Cybele's sacred animal, the lion. Lion statues often appear as figureheads or guardians, while lion rugs and capes denote kingly authority and Cybele's favour. This also works in Virgil's favour, since it parallels Cybele with one of the most popular of Rome's Greek deities, Hercules, who famously wears a lion's pelt as armour. All in all, it is a neat bit of religious syncretism and an attempt to Romanize a popular mystery cult. Of course, the entire Aeneid was patronized by Imperator Augustus himself, who was deeply devoted to Magna Mater.
