Weekend Top Ten #100
Special Commemorative Top 100 Films of My Lifetime Edition
Woohoo! I've been doing this for 100 weeks, and (I think) managed to get a Top Ten out every single weekend (if we allow for the odd Bank Holiday).
I tried to think of something special to do for the 100th edition, and so I decided to do something at once simple (favourite films) and needlessly time-intensive (a top 100). So here we are: my 100 favourite films, ranked in a spurious order. Of course, there are some rules I had to follow, some caveats:
These are films of my lifetime - that is, released between December 1981 and now. I've not seen any films so far this year, so really it runs till 2013. I put this restriction on to make life a little more complicated for myself, and to avoid a string of Star Wars titles or Spielberg films filling up the Top 20.
I've tried to use a film's full title and year of release, according to IMDb.
I've also tried to avoid using too many films from a given franchise; I think the only films that share list space with their siblings are The Terminator and Terminator 2. If I was born a little earlier, both Alien and Aliens I'm sure would have made the list. I just felt that a sequel really had to set itself apart from its predecessor, and make a huge impact on me, separate from the first film, in order to warrant more than one inclusion. So, apologies to the Back to the Future sequels: as much as I love them, I kinda feel they're represented by the first film's inclusion, and I can't, in good conscience, say they're quite as good as their predecessor.
Additionally, I've avoided including any of the Star Wars prequels, as Star Wars is already present on the list, and in all honesty I can't say the prequels were technically as good as other films I've listed.
I've tried, very hard, not to conflate sequels of series either; every film should stand on its own, as its own film (hence to Star Wars prequels, sadly). However, I made one exception from the off. The Lord of the Rings trilogy, for me, is impossible to separate: it's one story that just happens to be told across three films. So rather than just have three films clustered together in the Top Ten, I bundled it as one film.
That exception made, I then reluctantly made another: Toy Story. Although the trilogy doesn't quite tell one single story in the same way, I honestly don't know which is my favourite and to pick one and banish the others seemed arbitrary. Again, apologies to Back to the Future: I would have grouped you guys too, but I just don't feel that the sequels are quite as good as the 1985 original.
There are lots of films I've not seen, hence some notable exclusions.
Also, I've tried to include only films that remain fresh in my mind. So whilst I've seen films such as, say, Mona Lisa or The Color Purple, it was so long ago now that I don't know if I could give an honest appraisal of their quality, even though I'm fairly certain both are excellent. As such, I've discounted quite a few films due to the hazy fog of time clouding my vision.
I think that's it.
Oh, obviously these are my own personal and sometimes indefensible opinions: films that I love, that have had a big impact on me. Feel free to disagree.
