Positive/ Negative Assignment Final Submission + Artist Statement
I initially had trouble choosing photos because I did not know the elements which I should experiment with them. It took me a week to find the image for this assignment. Eventually, I decided to pick the photo of the autumn leaf on the street which I took on the road to go to school. I chose it due to the positive and negative space it gives. Then, I traced it with vellum paper to define the most exciting and informative shapes from the image. I took the autumn leaf to go with it, and my professor helped me to scan these shapes into many sizes so that I could paint them to create a final image. I picked a theme for the painting as a road with many autumns leaves falling. I did not sketch before painting and I quite regret it. After cutting them into many pieces, I prepared to mix gouache black and white so that it could create some grayscale for different color shapes. I think painting is not my strength, I struggled to mix black and white colors. It did not create some gray tones which I imagined in my mind, I tried many times and it did not work out, kind of sad. Additionally, gouache is dry pretty quickly so it was difficult to blend it. I took almost a noon to finish them.
About photoshop, I had no idea to make it at first. After being a struggle to think about the concept, I thought it would be better to keep an autumn theme. Thus, I picked the color palette for autumn with yellow, green, and kind of red colors. Accidentally, I bought a Bath&Body Works candle names “Fall in Bloom” so the idea came up this way. I planned to play those pieces into a blooming autumn flower. I duplicated autumn leaves into many pieces and overlapped them for creating flower shapes. And that is how it was formed.
After finishing them, I misunderstood that I must submit two final image works so I continually made the second images for this assignment. But again, I have a hard time for find images. And I saw an EXIT sign when going through the door at Arnold Hall by chance, so I thought of experimenting with text. The painting was inspired by FedEX’s logo which between the letter E and X would be created an arrow. The theme of the painting is a road with a crossroad and letters E and X with an arrow in between and another long arrow that would be built into a direction. Again, I had trouble painting and it took me quite some time to finish. But I enjoyed it. The photoshop for this image I thought to create a pattern. And I went with the flow, using, duplicating, making them an arrow together.
When doing this assignment, I think myself learn more about form and shape and how an image can change based on perspective and graphic form based on spatial, color hierarchy, and visual balance.
