H I D D L E S W E E K 2018 Day Two: Favourite Interview ~ Much Ado About Nothing Gala Premiere Tom (2013)
If you were to ask me what my favourite Tom interview was today, the answer would invariably differ from last week, last month, next week, next year (you get the picture)... And that’s because there’s something magical about each and every interview: whether it’s Tom’s passion (for tennis, Shakespeare, theatre, cinema, cake, a full English breakfast or the work he’s currently promoting); the way he puts interviewers at ease (introducing himself, remembering names and the previous times they’ve met or the eye contact - Oh Lord, the eye contact!); his sass; his vigour; his loquaciousness; his insightful and thought provoking answers (which inevitably lead me to want to know more about a particular subject, to read a book recommendation or watch a film I haven’t seen etc); his intelligence; his humility; his sense of humour and willingness to fully commit to each and every soundbite, however brief; his appreciation of those he’s worked with… In short, there’s never any half measures in ANY of his interviews.
Which is why I literally picked one from the proverbial hat this morning. Given that it’s Sunday, here’s some Tom (looking super pretty by the way!) whilst waxing lyrical about one of his greatest passions: Shakespeare, and how he would approach Hamlet if he were ever to play the role… 🤔
Enjoy.
p.s. Love this interview? Yeah, me too… which is why I giffed the life out of it here, here, here and here. (Incidentally, you can also watch it from a different angle here)

‘…But it seems to me that it’s an amazingly open role, and the actor is asked to think about fathers and mothers, and revenge and friendship and sex and mortality and philosophy, and all of those things. It’s just the most heart attack poetry around.’ 1/4

Hamlet. Act 3, Scene 2:
’Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue. But if you mouth it, as many of your players do, I had as lief the town crier spoke my lines. Nor do not saw the air too much with your hand thus, but use all gently, for in the very torrent, tempest, and (as I may say) whirlwind of passion, you must acquire and beget a temperance that may give it smoothness…’
