Blue Water, Evening Light

This is Amtrak’s train number 364 headed to Port Huron and a connection with VIA Rail Canada.

It’s seen here on the east side of Kalamazoo, Michigan, after having split the wind at 110 MPH for periods of time between Niles and Kalamazoo. The line is the former Michigan Central, which was controlled by the New York Central.

Blue Water, Moving Fast

Here’s a westbound Amtrak Blue Water absolutely ripping through the east side of Lawton, Michigan. The three trains I saw today were all doing every bit of their 110 MPH speed limit.

Chicago-Bound Wolverine

Amtrak number 351 is seen here hustling through the legs of an ancient coaling tower located just one mile west of Augusta, Michigan. The rail line and tower are of the former Michigan Central, subsidiary of the New York Central.

This portion of the line, east of Kalamazoo, is now owned by the State of Michigan; west of that town it’s Amtrak’s own where the trains routinely travel at 110 miles per hour. The line on this side is currently being worked on to bring the speed up. (The Michigan Central was a fine road, so the bones are there.)

The locomotive seen here, a Siemens SC-44, was built fairly recently and is owned by the State of Illinois and assigned to the Midwest.

Spring in Michigan, Part Two

Here is an eastbound train, Amtrak’s Wolverine (350), seen between Decatur and Lawton, Michigan. This track is former Michigan Central/New York Central and now boasts speeds of 110 MPH. The first car is one of the relatively new baggage cars, which came on-line just about two years ago.

Spring in Michigan, Part Three

Here is a westbound train, Amtrak’s Blue Water (365), seen between Decatur and Lawton, Michigan, 165 miles from Detroit.

This track is former Michigan Central, which was owned by the New York Central—as one can deduce from the aging and distinctive signal still operating here. With the deep pockets of the NYC, this route/alignment was truly built a first rate super-railroad. And now, with positive train control installed, Amtrak can run their trains at speeds of 110 MPH. As a result, this train is really kicking up some dust.
