Out of Touch (Big Bam Boom, 1984)
‘You’re out of touch, I’m out of time’ The only thing that keeps me from slitting my wrists or drinking myself to death a la Nick Cage is the zebra pants and leopard suit in this video. I looked up the lyrics to this song and no wonder it depresses the shit outta me.
“Shake it up is all that we know
Using the bodies up as we go
Waking up to fantasy
The shades all around aren't the colors we used to see
Broken ice still melts in the sun
And times that are broken can often be one again
We're soul alone
And soul really matters to me
Take a look around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time
But I'm out of my head when you're not around
Reaching out for something to hold
Looking for a love where the climate is cold
Manic moves and drowsy dreams
Or living in the middle between the two extremes
Smoking guns hot to the touch
Would cool down if we didn't use them so much
We're soul alone
And soul really”
The song has a quick beat and that’s possibly to keep someone from really listening to what the song is about. To me though, it really is a sad, sad song. But I’m out of time to write on this anymore. I believe there’s a bottle of Jame-o calling my name from a bathtub surrounded by dingdongs and razorblades.
Method of Modern Love (Big Bam Boom, 1984)
M-E-T-H-O-D-O-F-L-O-V-E…
Or
L-H-O-F-M-L-O-P-E as I heard it for many, many years until someone spelled it out for me because I didn’t get it the twelve times Hall did. That’s ok. This beat continues to get play on the jukebox, personal mixes and cd mixes. It’s a clever beat and uplifting, even though I didn’t really understand what they were singing/spelling for many, many years. Not one of my personal favorites which is the reason I probably really didn’t listen to the lyrics.
Say it isn’t so (Rock 'N Soul Part 1, 1983)
I was much too young to understand this song, but I LOVED it as a youngster. Maybe it was the beat or the tenderness in his voice, I’m still not sure. Regardless, I loved it then and I love it now. And love that lasts like that doesn’t really need an explanation does it?
One on One (H2O, 1982)
This song is a badass jam. I don’t know if you can say it any other way. It mostly reminds me of the time (not too long ago) when my friend tried to sic me on another friend in attempts from him liking a girl she did not approve of but I really didn’t like the fella and this song would make me think NOTHING OF HIM in any possible circumstance but I remember her trying to use this as a pickup line. (I think that was the longest attempt by me at a sentence ever. I woulda said it in one breath though, so there you go.) It was a cute pick up line, but this song is so much more meaningful to me and I would not use it, ever, as a petty pickup/take one for the team attempt. I have used it to describe how I feel for someone else and there are parts of it strictly for that person. “if it’s really right, there’s nothing else’ - no truer words than that Hall. That’s why you can’t be frivolous with this song. This song is meaningful. You only come out of the game for something truly special (or mandatory). I cannot just quit playing silly games for just anyone. I love to play! Now that I listen more, this song is pretty deep. And the saxophone - -pure G shit. Makes me think of Lane Meyer….but that’s a different story.
Maneater (H2O, 1982)
Another jukebox favorite. Only this song reminds me of my brother singing this to my friend Tonya. Listening to the lyrics right now, it does kind of sound like her. Well, the part where he sings “she only comes out at night”. I am pretty sure I remember her slurring out, “chew em up and spit em out” and embracing his dedication of the song. More power to you girl. As a kid, this song used to scare me. I thought it was about a female monster running the streets in neon fishnets, high heels, wild hair and mad lipgloss. That doesn’t describe my friend, but probably doesn’t fall too far from describing the rest of you ‘maneaters’ out there.
