Day 6 - What New Modes do you wanna see? 🔥
While the versus mode is the main draw for Super Smash Bros., alternate play modes give us more things to do in between duking it out. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U have received some flack for their lacking extra modes - while Smash Run was generally well-received, criticism was levied at Smash Tour and the lack of an Adventure Mode, in particular. With the focus again on one version of the game, what might Smash on Switch bring to the table?
The big issue with Smash 4 was the lack of single-player content, but truth be told, we don’t love Subspace Emissary. Cool cutscenes and Kirby-like gameplay, but the lack of Nintendo enemies and the length at points (seriously, the Great Maze sucks) makes it hard to come back to. However, some Adventure Mode would be great, in particular one that mixes Melee and Brawl’s Adventure Modes.
An approach we think would be interesting is mimicking “Guest Star ????? Star Allies Go!” from Kirby Star Allies - a relatively short (~60-90 minutes) run of various levels and bosses, featuring an emphasis on speed running. The Smash Bros. version we envision would have a few tweaks, of course. Let players choose a set of characters to take with them, have save points at certain intervals to make it more manageable, cram in plenty of Nintendo enemies and bosses, and most of all, make it feel substantial while still being replayable. So perhaps have some different stages based on who’s in the team, for example.
We also really love Break the Targets and Board the Platforms, and as impractical as it is to have it for the 60+ characters Smash Switch will have, we would enjoy seeing one or both return.
An expansion on the For Glory and For Fun modes from Smash 4 with more battle options would be great. Having a 1v1 version for the For Fun, for instance would be nice.
An improvement of Smash Run could make for a fun party mode to play with friends. Gamexplain did a great bit on how that could work.
Multi-character Battles! Essentially let me pick multiple characters to play as, with each stock representing a different character. It could even made to be multiplayer, or even expanded into its own Tag Team mode. We fully credit Gamexplain once again for this great idea and you can watch more about it here
A Final Smash Mode that makes the Final Smash more of a core mechanic of the mode would be awesome. More from Gamexplain
