November 13, 2015: Nicola and Ruth Payne, sisters to One Direction’s Liam Payne, supported BBC Children in Need at the annual telethon’s CIN Donation Centre, helping to raise what resulted in a record breaking amount of over £37 million for the cause.

Nicola Payne, (pictured left as Cinderella and Ruth as Snow White) joined many others who had fun dressing as special Storybook characters for the Children’s 2015 charity telethon. Nicola tweeted about how special it was to be involved with Children In Need the following day:

The BBC Children In Need charity is primarily supported by annual telethons. This charity is behind one of three high-profile British telethons; the other two,Red Nose Day and Sports Relief work primarily to support Comic Relief . From its 1980 inception to date, Children In Need has raised over £600 million, changing the lives of disabled children and disadvantaged youth, by sharing these donations among all regions of the UK. These funds ensure continued support to the programs Children In Need has already set in motion through the years, as well as provide new opportunities for educational experiences using grants.

The massive funds raised through the 2015 telethon which Ruth and Nicola Payne and other volunteers helped generate have already been able to provide over £15 million to generate new programs for 2016, for example, the Cued Speech Association working in South and West England.

The Cued Speech Association UK in Devon received £52,091 in new funding through a two-year grant to run a Fully Accessible Cued Speech Training, which will benefit more than 600 deaf young people and their families across the UK. This funding will cover the cost of staff to support families with consultations on the use of Cued Speech, assess their needs to allocate a fully-trained tutor, and offer training to the family enabling communication with their deaf child at home and later in a school environment.

Children In Need also has created The Belong Project based in Nottingham, which provides help to young refugees needing support to integrate into their new environment.

The Belong project is a much needed lifeline for young refugees who have faced distressing experiences and may struggle to integrate locally. Belong provides a place of safety for these children, helping them improve their English skills, offer tutoring for increased academic success, and help them socially to prevent any isolation that the children may face. Several of these children through the years have even returned to become youth leaders to help continue the work of this crucial project.
