Bokeh test for the new lens. Images are straight out of the camera, no edits.
Clearly, not going to be winning any awards for this bokeh. The first image is at the 14mm range of the 14-140mm lens, with the aperture wide open at f/3.7, and while the background is somewhat blurred, the subject doesn’t really pop from the background. The second image is at 140mm, and shows a lot more blurring and subject isolation, even though the maximum aperture at that length is 5.6 (cost of a versatile zoom lens, I guess). I think I’m going to love this lens, as it’s hard argue with a zoom lens that can cover this range and produce good images but I think I’ll invest in an old 40-50mm prime for portraits. It’s not that the 14-140mm couldn’t take good portraits, but If I really want it to pop, I think a faster lens is in order. It seems like I can get a nice vintage lens in reasonable condition for around $30, so it’s not as if it would be a banking-breaking exercise to have a dedicated portraiture lens.

First day with a new camera!
I’ve just bought a new Lumix G7 with a kit 14-140mm lens, went for a walk and took some test shots. I’m used to my father’s old Canon 40D, so the whole mirrorless setup is going to take some getting used to, but I’m more than pleased. Once I figured out how to turn off the fancy-dancy multi-point autofocus and had it focusing in the center, I found that the lens focuses quickly and from a relatively short distance. I’m pleased with the image quality too. These images are straight out of the camera, no editing, and I think the colors and balance have come out beautifully. While a similarly priced setup on a DSLR would undoubtedly get slightly higher image quality, it’s hard to knock what the G7 accomplishes, especially when you consider the video capabilities.

Black Friday 'treat.' I've spent a lot of time (and money) on Fuji and Sony, but I keep coming back to Panasonic, Olympus and m4/3
