Bokeh test for the new lens. Images are straight out of the camera, no edits.
Clearly, not going to be winning any awards for this bokeh. The first image is at the 14mm range of the 14-140mm lens, with the aperture wide open at f/3.7, and while the background is somewhat blurred, the subject doesn’t really pop from the background. The second image is at 140mm, and shows a lot more blurring and subject isolation, even though the maximum aperture at that length is 5.6 (cost of a versatile zoom lens, I guess). I think I’m going to love this lens, as it’s hard argue with a zoom lens that can cover this range and produce good images but I think I’ll invest in an old 40-50mm prime for portraits. It’s not that the 14-140mm couldn’t take good portraits, but If I really want it to pop, I think a faster lens is in order. It seems like I can get a nice vintage lens in reasonable condition for around $30, so it’s not as if it would be a banking-breaking exercise to have a dedicated portraiture lens.
Shot on a Lumix G7 with a Vario 14-140mm lens.
