Haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere yet, but I wonder if other people have noticed.
Shane says his room is 1410. Because of superstition, hotels famously “don’t have” a 13th floor. It goes directly from 12 to 14, which we see the elevator numbers do after Ilya bumps into Yuna on his way up to their first hook up.
I can’t think of a better metaphor for someone in the closet. The 14th floor insists it is the 14th floor, people regard it as the 14th floor. As Mitch Hedburg points out, the people on the 14th floor, you know what floor you’re really on.
Anyway, it’s wanting to be someone, something else. Pretending to be someone, something else. But inside, you know what you really are.
