Pisanello, born Antonio di Puccio Pisano, was highly respected by his peers and left excellent work in many genres, including frescoes, drawings, watercolors, and portraiture. He was the foremost portrait medalist of his day, and this portrait of the Marquis of Ferrara shows his skill in depicting the human form in profile.
