Ten bucks says Sam and Cas let Dean lock himself in that box but then just hang onto him while they figure out something else to do.
Baseless speculation time!!
When Sam says there has to be another way and Dean insists that there not—there’s NOT—and he’s so emphatic and determined (because obviously he STILL doesn’t believe he deserves to be saved) that I think he doth protest too much. I think there IS some other way to get the good ending but that it requires something else he’s not willing to do.
No one has seen the book except Dean and Billie. And his response, “what am I supposed to do with this?”, is NOT THE RESPONSE of someone who was given a very specific set of instructions about a Doomsday box and throwing it in the sea. You don’t have to ask what to do with that info—you do it or not, but you don’t need to ask.
What might it have said? I’m not sure. Perhaps it involved a sacrifice, of Jack probably, since it was his birth that led to the space-time rift and alternate worlds and cosmic consequences. (Also, Christological narrative ahoy!) With Dean firmly established as his father, and with our recent reminders of the sacrifices John made for his son, including going to Hell, you can bet he’d rather lock himself away to prevent all those Michael endings than send someone he regards as a son off to die.
It’s just a guess, of course, and totally wild speculation. But I was so disappointed that they apparently flat-out just told us the solution to last night’s cliffhanger that I would love it if there were more than met the eye. Thoughts?
