This day in TMHFN history: 15 Oct 2019 - Rainbow Direction makes it into the serious music press - Pitchfork!
In October 2019, more than 6 years into TMHFN’s existence and more than 5 years after we kicked off Rainbow Direction, we made it into the serious music press as journalist Emma Madden writes about Rainbow Direction in Pitchfork writes an article about
The article argues that “Tumblr has had a larger influence on English-speaking popular culture than most people realize” according to digital anthropologist Alex Cho, and that more than any other digital space, it helped to queer an entire generation.
Madden writes “There’s no greater example of the campy veneration of heterosexual artists on Tumblr than One Direction. This was largely thanks to Rainbow Direction, a campaign for queer visibility among 1D fans, created in 2013 by a Tumblr user who was tired of seeing straight girls targeted exclusively by the band. As 1D members became aware of their popularity on the site, they often participated in Tumblr fan Q&As, where they interacted with a largely queer fanbase that helped keep them at the forefront of culture until their split.
Prof Allison McCracken, a Tumblr expert who’s written an entire book about it, is interviewed and says
“It’s a great example of how Tumblr fans queered popular culture,” McCracken says. “On Tumblr, lesbian fans of One Direction were so pervasive that they defined the fandom there.”
Madden continues “Those attending One Direction shows were encouraged to wear rainbow clothing and accessories, which likely resulted in Harry Styles waving a rainbow Pride flag in September 2015. In the years since, the androgynous Styles has cultivated a kind of queer appeal, particularly after staying ambiguous about his own sexuality and debuting songs with a perceived subtext of bisexuality. Now, nearly a half-decade removed from the height of Rainbow Direction, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic for the Tumblr we once knew—where queer earnestness was encouraged, where Frank Ocean felt safe enough to share his heart.”

Same, Emma Madden, same. The Tumblr user writing up this post is the same one who created TMHFN all the way back in 2013 and I am as nostalgic about it as you were in 2019 already. BUT, that doesn’t mean we should not continue our quest to queer up this fandom, right? Right. Bring your rainbows to the concert and celebrate being your queer self, peeps, the world will be all the better for it!
che comunque va bene il vento, va bene la pioggia e vanno bene anche i tuoni, ma non quelli così forti che fanno tremare anche le finestre perché io stanotte un po' vorrei anche dormire, grazie ciao
ennotana vampire hc: vampire!enno would probably start out trying to seduce tanaka just to get at his blood, but he'd end up being way too enamoured with this silly human that he ends up falling in love with him instead
