Altri morirà per la Storia d'Italia volentieri e forse qualcuno per risolvere in qualche modo la vita. Ma io per far compagnia a questo popolo digiuno che non sa perché va a morire popolo che muore in guerra perché "mi vuol bene" "per me" nei suoi sessanta uomini comandati siccome è il giorno che tocca morire.   Altri morirà per le medaglie e per le ovazioni ma io per questo popolo illetterato che non prepara guerra perché di miseria ha campato la miseria che non fa guerre, ma semmai rivoluzioni. Altri morirà per la sua vita ma io per questo popolo che fa i suoi figlioli perché sotto coperte non si conosce miseria popolo che accende il suo fuoco solo a mattina popolo che di osteria fa scuola popolo non guidato, sublime materia.

Altri morirà solo, ma io sempre accompagnato: eccomi, come davo alla ruota la mia spalla facchina e ora, invece, la vita.

Sotto ragazzi, se non si muore si riposerà allo spedale. Ma se si dovesse morire basterà un giorno di sole e tutta Italia ricomincerà a cantare.
