The Fifteen Prayers of St. Bridget

These Prayers and these Promises have been copied from a book printed in Toulouse in 1740 and published by the P. Adrien Parvilliers of the Company of Jesus, Apostolic Missionary of the Holy Land, with approbation, permission and recommendation to distribute them.

Pope Pius IX took cognizance of these Prayers with the prologue; he approved them May 31, 1862, recognizing them as true and for the good of souls.

As St. Bridget for a long time wanted to know the number of blows Our Lord received during His Passion, He one day appeared to her and said: “I received 5480 blows on My Body. If you wish to honor them in some way, say 15 Our Fathers and 15 Hail Marys with the following Prayers (which He taught her) for a whole year. When the year is up, you will have honored each one of My Wounds.”

July 23 – Celebrating the life of St Bridget of Sweden 

Today St Bridget is probably most often remembered for the 15 Prayers of the Sorrows of Christ. These 15 prayers Jesus gave to Saint Bridget of Sweden in the Church of St. Paul in Rome. The prayers are approved by Pope Pius IX. and the 12 Year Prayers which are meditations on the seven times that Christ shed His Precious Blood on our account. However,Rome has stated only that the promises were uncertain, as to their supernatural origin. It says nothing against the prayers, which have been in regular use since the Middle Ages. Those who visit the Church of St. Paul in Rome can see the life-size crucifix sculptured by Pietro Cavallini, before which St. Bridget knelt, and there can be read the following inscription: “Pendentis pendente Dei verba accepit aure accipit et verbum corde Brigitta Deum. Anno Jubilei MCCCL,” which recalls the prodigy of the crucifix conversing with St. Bridget.2 (Translation: “Bridget not only receives the words of God hanging in the air, but takes the word of God into her heart. Jubilee Year 1350.”)
