with interviews come callbacks and to min yoongi; it always felt like waiting to hear back was the most stressful and tedious part of the process.
yoongi wasn’t expecting a reply. not with all those radiant, young and attractive faces in the waiting room on the day of the casting and not with all of those talents listed on people’s forms that he managed to take peaks at when they weren’t looking. how the fuck did “knows all the lines to space jam” compare to everything else?
getting a phone call from one of the companies put him into utter shock, but it was more shocking when the company was sphere.
he didn’t know if it was the good type of shock or bad type of shock. he was just lost, having no clue on what the next step was. it was his first time getting any sort of response from a company. sphere wasn’t near being his top choice, but he wasn’t gonna turn down the opportunity. he was sure there were people who would kill to have it. plus every entertainment company needs more rappers these days, right? perhaps, he was sphere’s next prodigy. the thought of it excited him. the thought of a company wanting him excited him.
compared to nova, his knowledge on sphere entertainment was minimal. all he knew about was their currently on the rise girl group she’z. but quite honestly, yoongi didn’t care about what company he was signed to at this point. call him low maintenance, but he just wanted his work to be noticed.
the voice that called him out of the waiting room and into the audition room was loud and woke him up from his daze. he was convinced this whole thing had been a dream, but that didn’t stop him from following the person into the studio.
all he had was sixty seconds to prove he was worth signing and yoongi hoped that after spending hours on top of hours perfecting his voice and practicing that it would all be worth it.
several faces looked at the boy the second he had walked in and yoongi could feel the hairs raising on his neck and the sweat starting to form on his palms. if he thought he was nervous during the interview he was wrong.
the rapper found himself bowing to each judge and almost tripping over one of the camera cords on his way in. his eye contact lingered with baek jiyoung for a second too long because ‘holy shit, she’s so much prettier in real life than she is on google images.’
some of the expressions were more on the blank side while others had their kind welcoming grins on full blast. you could tell which ones were already tired and bored from watching people try out.
after introducing himself, the music started and yoongi’s expression had switched in an instant. gaeko’s “rhythm is life.” the song was slightly old, almost three years now, but yoongi had resorted to it after scoping out through his entire itunes account. the faster paced verses showed off his speed rapping skills and he felt like overall the song did match his usual flow.
“입담이 좀 거칠어. 항상 위험한 수위
스웩 타령 안 해도 남들보다 약간 우위
오싹하게 하는 목소리 때문에 탈 거야, 추위
이건 1등급 랩 송이야. 가장 맛있는 부위.”
his words shot out like bullets. quickly spitting out the lyrics with small smirks directed to some of the judges during parts of the song. he practiced those little smirks in the mirror earlier that day. making sure they were perfected just like everything else.
"사람들 취향은 철새처럼 유행 따라 왔다 가지만
난 자석 같은 놈이라 다들 철쇠처럼 따라와
다가와 다가와, 전진처럼. 아는 여자 데리고 와, 장진처럼
전진 장진 하는 나의 랩은 좀 꿀떡 같아, 커빈처럼 (얼음)
rhythm is life, life is rhythm. 리듬이는 게으른 날 움직이는 기름
나이스한 사나이의 긍정 리듬이 가진 파워가 이뤄낸 나의 나의 이름
칠흑 같은 어둠에서 갈고 닦고 다듬어낸 치명적인 비음
가리온이 깔아놓은 홍대 신촌 리듬 위로 개코, let 's go get 'em."
the speed increases and so does yoongi's pride. he bounces on his feet, uses hand gestures, and sways to some parts of the music in attempts to hype up the performance. in his opinion it worked pretty well, based off of the small smiles he managed to drag out of previously expressionless judges and that was enough to boost his ego for the next few months.
the music finishes and all yoongi can do is thank the people for giving him this opportunity.
and with that, it's over and now he's back to waiting.
bae joohyun / nova entertainment / say my name ( 0:16 - 1:14 )
as her legs shake when waiting for her audition, joohyun bites her lip and feels happy seulgi is there with her. although she usually prefers to go to auditions alone, so nobody would witness her nervousness, this time joohyun thinks that having the friend is a good distraction. there’s nothing surprising when one say joohyun leans towards self-destruction. she is a force of nature, she walks by her anger, purposely causing damage to herself and others. the last time she was in an audition for one of the big companies, joohyun had starved herself and ended in the hospital, earning more health issues to worry about. she tried not to do the same this time, surrounding herself with people who would block her path towards the worst of choices.
however, that also meant her anxiety has little escape. she can feel it boiling beneath her skin as she picks at the skin on her thumb, looking to all the rivals. in some sense, seulgi is her rival as well, but joohyun tries not to think about it. she also tries not to think about her life if she fails that audition again. joohyun doubts her confidence would suffer too much, but it would be definitely discouraging. she was blindly aiming to become an idol for years and failing was never an option for her. not when failing meant going back to her old life where she would drown in regret and shame. another sigh falls from her lips and she is soon called.
the high school student smiles, her stomach feeling like ice and her legs seeming way too light. the time she has for the audition is short and it bothered her. she is the one to struggle when choosing songs and having more time usually let her with more choices, but this time, she just chose a cut from a destiny child’s song. well, technically. it’s the version beyoncé sang in a live of hers, but she really doubts anyone would be interested in that. so joohyun just hands the song she prepared to the person in charge of the sound and walked towards the center of the room.
“hello, my name is bae joohyun, please take care of me” she says with a smile, offering a deep bow to the people whose eyes were on her. her stomach was filled with butterflies when she looks up to find hyun bin’s face. she needs to admit: part of her is really excited for this audition because of him. joohyun feels like a silly fangirl when her smile grows as she looks at the ceo. definitely, he is even more handsome in person - and more charismatic. it’s a shame she can’t get an autograph. however, she is dancing in front of him. hyun bin will watch her dance and god, she is excited. “i hope you like the dance i prepared for you today”
another brief bow and she waits for the song to begin with her signature smile on her face. she feels pretty confident about the choreography so when the beyoncé’s voice sounds through the room, joohyun feels her anxiety fading a bit. it’s still there, but she feels happy to be able to perform the song and to do it in front of hyun bin. besides, the whole atmosphere the song creates makes her want to bite her lip and send confident stares through sharp eyes.
even though she starts easy and slow, her movements become sharper and quicker according to the beat. joohyun thinks that it’s a good way to show that she can follow fluid dance moves but also be very sharp. she mouthed some lyrics when the song became a bit more aggressive and flirted during the slower parts. and eventually, she simply had fun although there were too many eyes judging her every move and every expression. joohyun doesn’t try to hide the spark of joy in her eyes, deciding that it’s good if they can see just how she loves it - just how she wants it. and she does love dancing a lot and she does want to be a trainee very bad.
by the end of her cut of the song, joohyun just let go, smile spreading through her face until beyoncé’s voice was interrupted. she was barely breathless, one minute being too little to really steal her breath. she finds herself wishing the audition was longer and the wait for the results was shorter. but she knows there’s no way she can cheat their system so she needs to find a way to cheat her own brain. maybe she’ll refrain from staring at her phone for the next days. again, she bows at her waist and her eyes land on every judge - sparkling when meeting hyun bin.
“thank you very much for your time and this opportunity” the brunette finishes saying and leaves the room, being struck with anxiety as soon as the door closes behind her. her weak heart beats erratically and she has to sit down, taking deep breaths. she accepts the bottle of water seulgi hands her and smiles back, thanking her with a look of her eye. a sigh and she looks up to seulgi again.
// ( ● ) STAR BRIGHT 2015 CALLBACK AUDITION ;
SPHERE ENT !
Ledisi ; I Miss You Now ( 0:12 - 1:12 )
Over the past couple years Hansol had done countless auditions for companies, so he was relatively used to it by now. He liked to think it was luck, because he didn’t consider himself a very lucky person, and it was easier than admitting he’d not done well enough, though deep down he knew, and it pushed him to work harder. So he hadn’t been expecting a call back after the interview, as many times before he hadn’t - he didn’t think this time would be any different. It’d been with a choked thank you that he replied to the woman on the other end of the line informing him that he’d received a callback from Sphere. Sure, it wasn’t the company he’d had his sights set on, but it was something, and he wasn’t going to stick his nose up at the opportunity. He wanted to perform on stage and make music and no matter the company, he was one step closer already.
From all of the dances Hansol had choreographed himself over the last year, there was one that stuck out in his head instantly, and he’d been practising it lately, as it was by far his favourite, and best executed dance with the sharpest moves mixed with the most fluid and gentle - it was perfect.
There were definitely more nerves settling inside him now, tension lingering in his muscles day and night as he lay awake going over the routine in his head as the day of the audition drew closer. He was so close now - he just had to impress them with his dancing now, catch their attention and stick in their minds. He’d already done well enough to get a callback, so they were initially interested, he just had to hold that interest, stick it in their minds and make them remember him.
Then the day was upon him.
He woke feeling rather numb, as if it wasn’t really happening, and he was waking earlier than usual for some other reason. The nerves he’d felt throughout the precious days were absent, as if they’d finally let him get a moments rest before his actual audition. He’d slept well that night, compared to the other nights when his brain just wouldn’t rest, making sure every single aspect of his dance was perfected. He needed this more than anything.
Arriving at the Sphere building Hansol almost had to pinch himself, the whole experience still not yet sinking in. It wasn’t until he entered the waiting room that he really felt it. It hit like a train, leaving his breath shuddering from his lungs and his palms clammy. From previous experience Hansol knew he couldn’t get worked up in the minutes before the audition, just like with an exam. You shouldn’t keep panicking over everything you had to remember in the minutes before the crucial moment, because it’d get muffled up, and you’d find yourself in a worse position. So, with slightly shaky fingers he turned on the song he was to dance to, one headphone in, and focused on his breathing.
He knew the dance like the back of his hand, all he had to do was perform it for the casting agents sat waiting in the room behind the door at the other end of the room. Soon enough the clamminess of his palms lessened and his breathing evened out - he felt okay. Of course the nerves were there, still lingering under his skin, but he knew that now all he could do was perform the dance he knew so well he could dance it in his sleep, and hope that the casting agents, and Baek Jiyoung, liked it enough to offer him a contract - it’d be a dream come true, and he was so close he could almost feel that satisfaction and elation of taking a huge leap closer to his dream.
Listening to every name called he eventually turned the song off and shoved his headphones in his jacket pocket, simply waiting now, knowing his time was nearing.
“Kim Hansol.”
It was his turn to show what he had to offer.
Standing on surprisingly steady legs he made his way to the door at the other end of the room, offering a small smile and bow of his head to the man calling names at the door, before making his way inside. The first thing his eyes fell on was the table behind which casting agents, and Baek Jiyoung, sat. Finding himself in the center of the room facing the, as he should really call them, judges, within seconds, he broke into a bright smile, readying himself for the make-or-break moment of his life.
“Hello, my name is Kim Hansol, and I will be dancing for you today.”
The song he’d picked wasn’t a particularly popular song, but the beat was strong, the melody soft, and the vocals blending with the entirety of it - perfect for Hansol’s style. Reaching over to hand his CD to the man by the stereo he found his spot in the centre of the room, head hung and eyes closed and slowly the music began to play. He’d cut the intro slightly, to lengthen the time he spent actually dancing, rather than giving the lengthy, but effective build up - he only had one minute to showcase his dancing, he had to use every second he could get.
And then he was lost in the music.
The music started with six beats, each accompanied by a flick of Hansol’s wrists and legs, a strong entrance into the routine with a slow pulse, following both melody and beat. His hands, curled into fists gave a soft hit to both hips in unison, pressing into the bones as one leg after another kicked out, following the beat. His body seemed to flow so instinctively into the music after that point that he barely had to think about it, facial expressions matching each and every move, the feeling going from sharp and tense, to sensual and slow, limbs both heavy, and light all in one, pressing into the floor while making no sound when they hit - he seemed to almost hover above the ground as he moved, carried on an air of tranquillity, carefree in his own world of dance.
Hands raising together, back straightening with them, then lowering swiftly, spine following, as if his head were attached to a string tied to his wrists, movement mimicked in both. Eat beat was accompanied by a sharp movement; a hand reaching out to the side in a single, quick flick, head turning the other way, then his wrist circling, fingers delicately splayed out and following the lilting melody, before his back straightened on a beat and both arms came in, one crossed over his chest, the other covering his mouth as a foot flicked in from the side.
This routine was Hansol’s favourite purely because the strength of the moves was present while still showcasing such gentleness. It was a perfect mix of sharp and smooth - it was Hansol’s favourite mixture, in almost every situation and area of life. There was neither too much nor too little of either and he easily followed the rhythm, as if he were born to move this way.
Hansol often believed he was.
A hand reached up, wrist circling, before both hands came to his hips, both wrists this time making a single rotation, feet stepping the side, right foot following the movement of his right wrist in a more snappy swivel from left to right on the softer beat underlying the entire song. There were layers to the music, Hansol found as he listened again and again over the time, picking it apart and fitting movements into each bit, utilising every limb he had to move. Often dancers forgot about the importance of their head and the following of the beat with head movements, these days more focus was on the hips.
Hansol knew how to move his hips, but for this dance other body parts came into more use, taking those forgotten movements both sharp and soft and mixing them into one, like a sweet, but tangy fruit.
As he neared the end of his choreo he felt the surge he often got toward the end, that rush of adrenaline at the realisation that he’d have to stop soon, stop the thing that was currently bringing him so much happiness, even if only for a short while, and though it was an audition and right in the back of his mind that thought still lingered, he was enjoying it. It pushed him on with more power and precision, ankles flicking and swivelling with each beat as a cluster joined together and his body turned with a swivel of his hips and a flick of eat leg, followed by a pulsing swivel of each ankle, head mimicking the flick, then roll of his wrists.
A hand came up as the music began to fade, running through his hair and pulling his head back, lips parting ever so slightly and brow furrowing in what could be taken as a momentary moan, but was simply for the emphasis of the dance. Then his hand slid round his head and off to the side with a gentler twitch of his wrist outward, feet taking two slow almost sliding steps to the center of the room, hands falling on the last beat along with his head which hung, eyes trained on his hands curled into loose fists in front of him.
The music faded out completely and slowly Hansol lifted his head, a wide grin on his lips - the euphoria that accompanied dancing had leaked from his heart into every single one of his veins and his entire body was tingling. With a ninety degree bow he thanked the judges then turned to the exit door and walked with steady steps, back straight and head held high as he left.
As the door closed behind him he dropped his head into his hands and grinned against his palms. It had been a great experience, and he felt it’d been the best he’d ever danced that routine. He’d given it his all, and that was all he could give. He just hoped and prayed that those judging his audition thought he’d done as well as he felt he had.
And now all he could do was wait and see whether it had been enough.
// (★) Star Bright Audition; Callback; Target NOVA
loc;; nova ent
song;; never mind /x/
Two nights in a sleepless state, with a glass of coffee In her hand and a pen in the other one, Hyo-jin was definitely determent to go Super Nova. If she spend that much time working on university, she could have already finished. However, music was her life. No matter what, even if surgeons could save lives, music could do that too as long as you managed to hit the right spot. She knew that, she had experienced it a lot through her underground career, but it was always in a negative way. Whenever she was dissing, she went all out on defending herself and bringing the other person down. Never bringing them up. However, she was doing that during the free periods of the day, tutoring students from SOPA to pass their exams. She was a workaholic, and she was always proud to admit it. Due to medical issues, she was also known for the lack of sleep, which was a long gone necessity from her live. She didn't need it, and the late sleepless nights turned into more time spending on polishing her skills.
Standing in front of Nova Building, Elly smiled. She was doing a big dream of hers. She was actually doing something to achieve it. Bobby better pat her on the back soon. With a quick cracking of her neck she stepped inside and looked around in curiosity, it was really nice and simple. She made her way to the waiting room. Ah.. So many people. The blonde muttered to herself and ran a hand through her hair. Finding a small space in a corner, she leaned against the cold wall and pulled her phone out, the earphones in her right ear and she blasted her song. She was pumped for it, ready to slay the people inside the room. Mouthing the lyrics every so often she let the beat absorb her, it was pretty emotional for her to live a double live all the time. Perfect medical student and a nasty underground rapper, but now, she had the chance to prove herself as a worthy idol. Neither of the two close enough to describe it.
"Ahn Hyo-jin?"
The blondes head snapped, the earphones quickly tugged away as she pushed herself off the wall. The person who had said her name noticed her.
"It's your turn."
Her heart skipped a beat. Was she really going to see Hyun Bin in person and perform live in front of him? Apparently. She walked calmly to the door that lead into the room where the judges waited. Pull your shit together Hyo-jin. You are going to rock this stage! Remember to show them your hip movements! She was going to kill Jimin for making her think that. Fixing her hair one last time before finally walking in, then went to stand on the X in front of the judges and smiled, bowing again at a perfect 90 degrees.
"Hello. Ahn Hyo-jin, age twenty-two, born on December seventh nineteen-ninety-three."
Elly said in a polite manner, smiling again. She had one minute, to tell a lot. She took a deep breath, eyes landing on the Nova CEO for a second. I'm dead. Were her thought before the music began to play, followed by her own voice.
If there is anything different you see, its my height
Along with being a little bit more mature for my age
Coming from the underground workplace in Seoul
My beat has been laid out, until it shot right through you
It's the origin of my youth, I'm gonna keep it
There was just a microphone to make her voice sound louder, so she had just one less thing to worry about. It was bit thought at the beginning but after the first part, she was getting the hang of it. Her presence in the room was finally shown. She had a story to tell, that happened quite some time ago, back when she was in China. When she first picked up the mic and tried doing music by herself and got put down because a girl can not rap. Yes, she was going to prove the people she could rap.
People kept saying, don't go overboard
Acting like a know-it-all want to be musician,
People say they didn't get paid shit
Hyo-jin let out a muffled laugh, a rather breathy one too. She knew at the beginning the payment would be shit, but she was willing to go and do it. Because her dream was to be on stage, and do what she was best at - making music. Even if she didn’t get paid much at all, she would still be happy, money wasn't everything for her.
You will make your home go broke because you did it
So from that point onwards, I didn't care
No matter what people said
I only lived how I ever wanted,
Guided by my own believes
Her hand formed a gun, tapping her fingers against her head a few times, a lopsided smirk crawling on her lips as she began to feel the song build up. She loved the lyrics, and the fact that hand gestures were good enough for most of it, it was more than she could ask for.
Since you’re looking at me,
How do you think I'm doing right now?
Elly reached out towards the judges, when the first line was said, the smirk wiping off her face as she didn’t expect any reaction from them. It was good enough, way too good that she expected. No mistakes, nothing. It was going smooth.
How do you think I am?
That's the question I want to ask to the people,
Who prayed to God I somehow screwed up
Does it seem like my home is going broke, you bastards?
The blonde ran her hand through her hair, looking up at the mentioning of God, a step back following her movements. She wasn’t found of swearing in front of people she barely knew, but she had to. It was either the real her or nothing. Ahn Hyo-jin was pretty determined to do it the way she preferred at the moment, and mold to fit the company if she was accepted.
I don't give a shit, Not a single fuck.
Like i kept on saying hundreds of times a day,
Never mind me,
I have had the taste of failure and frustration, but just bowed my head
You're still young and immature, don't worry about it
She headed towards the judges with a step or two, stopping before patting herself on the chest. She probably had fire in her eyes, because the song was going to its climax. The emotions pilled up from the past few years spilling out in front of the people in the room in the strangest way Elly could have thought off.
That's what people kept on saying, every other day
If you can't seem to return, go through your mistakes
Just forget them all, keep moving on
Never mind what people said,
Its not at easy, but it helps get weight off your chest.
If you think you’re gonna crash, just go pedal to the metal,
You better never surrender.
With the last line from the verse said, she stepped back, to where the X was. The lyrics were falling from her lips in a fast pace, but well enough to be understood without needed to read. That was one of her strong points. She took a quick breath, big enough to last her through a chunk from the song. Her hand found itself in her hair, pulling it away from her face and but staying there, making sure there was no hair blocking her vision as the last part was soon to finish.
Never mind, Never mind.
No matter what you throw at me, I will go through it
Never mind, Never mind
There are a lot of things in the world that you can't stop
So you better-
The music suddenly calmed down, only the piano was played, a tune that had been repeating itself. Hyo-jin smiled, rapping the words as if she was talking to someone - mainly to herself.
Never mind, Never mind
You are too young and immature to give up, you idiot
If you are going to crash, just go pedal to the metal
With the last key hit, she smiled even more, bowing politely.
“Thank you for the time.”
She said and quickly headed out of the room, the smile still glowing on her face. She was proud of herself. But now, she was going to nerve wreck herself because she wasn’t the last one to go in there, and she had to wait in the end to see if she would get the contract. However, realization hit her a bit latter, with the fact that she cursed in Hyun Bin’s face.
