Kniphausen hawk

South German, 1697

Kniphausen hawk, a ceremonial pouring vessel, made by an unknown artist around 1697 for George William van Kniphausen, Count of the Holy Roman Empire, of silver, encrusted with red garnets, turquoises, sapphires, citrine quartzes, emeralds, amethysts, and onyx.

This gem-studded cup in the form of a hawk, with the head and wings enamelled to resemble feathers, once belonged to Count Kniphausen and would have been displayed at his home, Nienort Castle in the Netherlands.

The densely decorated surface is similar to objects made in Germany and is covered with faceted garnets interspersed with turquoises, citrines and amethysts.

Between the hawk’s talons are three carved cameo heads of cherubs, reminiscent of the story of Jupiter in the guise of an eagle abducting the youth Ganymede to serve as his cupbearer.
