We discussed TCCC, prolonged field care, and the importance of having his entire Special Forces team trained up prior to deployment so they were all profiencent medically. We discuss some aspects of mental toughness as well as making that transition from a soldier to a civilian. Chris was also a teammate of Staff Sergeant Matthew McClintock who was killed in action just over a year ago in Afghanistan. Matthew died while protecting his teammates, doing what he loved, on the field of battle. Bad-assed Green Beret Medic being upgraded to Medal of Honor from a Silver Star. Read his narrative below: As the soldiers navigated through the valley, a firefight quickly erupted, with insurgent sniper fire, rocket-propelled grenades, and small arms and machine gun fire forcing the unit into a defensive fighting position. Shurer’s unit received word another forward-assault unit was also pinned down at another location and had sustained multiple casualties. He moved quickly through a hail of bullets toward the base of the mountain to reach the pinned-down unit. While on the move, Shurer stopped to treat a soldier wounded in his neck by shrapnel from a RPG blast. Shurer spent the next hour fighting across several hundred meters and killing multiple insurgents before reaching the pinned-down unit and immediately aiding four critically wounded U.S. soldiers and 10 injured Afghan commandos. Shortly after, Shurer and his unit’s sergeant were shot at the same time, though he still managed to run 15 meters through a barrage of gunfire to help his sergeant. Despite a bullet hitting his helmet and a gunshot wound to his arm, Shurer pulled his sergeant to cover and rendered care. Shurer then moved back through heavy gunfire to help aid another soldier who lost his right leg. For the next several hours, Shurer helped keep the large insurgent force at bay while simultaneously providing care to other wounded soldiers. Shurer's actions helped save the lives of the casualties that day, according to the Army. Chris: My ODA was constantly called down to an area near the Pakistan boarder that the Taliban were giving trouble to a very isolated infantry unit Fobbed down there. We went down there with information that they’d been stashing explosive material in this old abandoned village. Stepped out of our vehicle’s, and immediately took small arms fire. Returned fire and they ran away. We advanced up the hill, and once we reached the top they trigged an IED. They buried it too deep, but it still injured some of my teammates. One in particular got shrapnel all the way up his back. When I was treating him we called in the MEDEVAC we attempted to put him on a stretcher, and he said “Don’t you dare! I’m not letting these cowards see me on a stretcher on the way to the MEDEVAC”. So we walked him to the helicopter and he got on standing. Below is an excerpt from the episode. Special Forces operator Chuck Ritter: In the video you see me coming around the corner shot. So basically we under estimated the enemy force present in the area. Our partners were the Afghan Commando’s, and we had very few Americans on the ground. We came in at night, and it was clear all night. Then in the morning right when the sun came up the enemy actually closed to within 5 to 10 meters of our battle positions, and started throwing hand grenade’s over the wall, and were really lighting us up. So we were going out trying to push these guys back off our perimeter. The fact that the terrain was very maze like allowed them the freedom of maneuverability to move on us. Aerial imagery, and everything else didn’t paint the right picture on the ground. An overhead drone spotted an ambush, and the operator was telling us that there was an enemy ambush set up a couple hundred meters away. We were trying to flank that ambush, but in reality the ambush was right there. We turned the corner, an Afghan Commando got shot took a round to the leg, and it blew off some fingers. A good majority of the rest of the Afghan Commando’s ran away. It was me, my medic, and EOD guy. All of the fast movers moved off station, so the only thing I had overhead was Apache’s. As an 18 Delta in a regular Special Forces Group if that makes any sense your primary hat is an operator. You’re a Green Beret first, and a medic second. You’re a shooter, and then should the occasion arise you become a medic. It’s not much different on the Special Missions side of the house. The emphasis is placed on your specialty. You go through the same training as an operator, but when you go to your maneuver element you are the subject matter expert in tactical medicine. Special Forces medics, from the 3rd Special Forces Group treat a simulated battlefield trauma case during training. Special Forces Medical Seargents (18D) are an integral part of SF ODAs. Not only can Special Forces Medics provide care for battlefield casualties, they can also help in 'hearts and minds' operations by providing medical care to local populations. Special Forces Medics are part of the reason that a SF ODA is such a versatile unit. SF Medics undergo 250 days of advanced medical training. They are versed in trauma management, infectious diseases, cardiac life support and surgical procedures. They also attain a basic level of understanding of veterinary and dental medicine. This picture was taken on the side of the mountain overlooking the valley where the incident took place. Lately there's been a lot of articles circulating the internet basically bashing former US Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell in regards to the ill fated Operation Red Wings. What bothers me the most about this is people are taking the word of a known Taliban sympathizer, and running with it. On episode 8 of the Global Recon Podcast we had retired Special Forces Medic Travis Osborn on the show @defiant_llc. Travis was the lead medic who first made contact with Marcus while he was in the village after the firefight in which 3 of his teamates were killed. Travis recounts the rescue efforts from the Special Forces side, and having treated Marcus for the next 17 hours or so he confirms that Marcus had no magazines in his rifle while its being reported that he had 11 magazines. In this photo are the Green Berets. We had the privilege of having Travis Osborn @livehard18D (pictured on the far right) who was the 18Delta (Special Forces Medic) who treated Marcus while awaiting extraction in that village on the latest episode of the podcast.
