Very large living room. I can appreciate that it’s not all white.

I like those pocket doors. 

Look at the cute little office that the pocket doors open up to.

Very large kitchen. 

Look at how high that ceiling is. 

One of the full baths. Nice vintage look. 

Pretty railing. Look at the skylights they put in. 

Look at this- they put a tub in the spacious main bd.

This is very large secondary bedroom.

This bedroom is so pretty.

Nicely renovated shower room. 

They made a small deck on the back of the house.

There’s also a side porch and a nice fence for a garden.

They are both reality shows about normal people having to live and do everything as if they were in the Edwardian/Victorian era.

1900 House = Victorian (supposed to be exactly the year 1900)

Manner House = Edwardian (supposed to be either 1905 or 1906, I don't quite remember which...)

History vs Reality

Remember back in the day when PBS and the BBC tried to combine documentaries with reality TV? And that was before reality TV took over everything on the boob tube; so I guess it was kind of innovative? Well, they certainly proved interesting, and rather amusing, when people could manage to stop complaining.

Whoever was in charge of casting these things should probably be fired. The PBS productions especially seemed favor the inept and the egotistical. Of course in the case of Frontier House this is somewhat acceptable. There were after all many people moving from the city to the frontier at that time who had perhaps even less of an idea what they were doing then those cast for the show.

Colonial House has so far been the only one that I've not finished though. It was a couple of years ago now. But as I recall there was just no end of drama due to sabbath obligations. You would think anyone looking to reenact the Plymouth colony would realize they might have to do some sitting around on a Sunday – they didn't even have to listen to anything religion specific! For better or worse, this is one of the few series I have not been able to relocate on youtube.

The one I probably have the most mixed feelings about was Regency House Party, when educational television met dating/arrange marriage/reality TV. I mean the premise was just so entirely implausible in the modern era that it just came across as so incredibly ridiculous that it's laughable. The narrator had his work cut out for him on this one, almost constantly having to not only explain the historical premise of the “plot” of the show, but also having to explain how various people's actions were historically inaccurate. You still get a pretty good idea of what the period was like, you just have to dig for it a bit.

If you hadn't realized this already, you probably not watch these shows expecting everyone to act completely in character and 100% historically accurate all the time - or even most of the time. I'll be covering a few more along those lines soon. I'm working my way through Texas Ranch House at the moment, but I have at least one series in mind that is much more history focused.

Despite how hard I have been on them, there is apparently something about these hybrids that I do genuinly enjoy. Why else am I watching them? The shows after all are very good at highlighting the differences between modern society and how society used to be. I say, take what's good of both and run with it.
