France Interwar Years Script
The interwar years were the period from the years 1918-1939, in between the first and second world war. It is a time heavily associated with economic depression and devastation from the aftermath of the First World War. It is also a period of time were the concept of Fascism rapidly rose throughout Western Europe.
France was devastated by more human and material losses during the war than any other of the allied powers, but they made an exceptional recovery. Most of the northern and eastern areas of France had been struck with four years of trench warfare, which enabled the need for a massive reconstruction campaign, which was to be funded by German reparation payments and loans.
France suffered economically after the First World War. They found a great difficulty in converting from a wartime economy to a peaceful one. The French government was in a large amount of debt, which they depended on war reparations from Germany as well as external loans to annihilate the problem, although they were unsuccessful.
Slide 4: Empire Expansion
France expanded its imperialistic possessions to include Syria and Lebanon in the Middle East, as well as the former German colonies of Togo and Cameroon in Africa as part of their Empire. France became a more powerful nation on the world stage after the First World War, especially in comparison to the prewar period.
France became the main guarantor power of the treaties signed at the Paris Peace conference. They maintained the largest armed forces in Europe during the interwar period, and formulated a detailed system of bilateral and multilateral alliances with the new states of East Central Europe.
France was overwhelmed by the demolition of their nation, and preceded to create a reconstruction campaign. The reconstruction began the revamping of damaged industries in France especially with the most advanced technology and machinery. While this reconstruction was revolutionary, it seemed superficial in the sense that much of the French nation was damaged psychologically, demographically and spiritually.

France finally took light in moving forward from the post-war devastation. They decided to join the newly developed League of Nations as a way to move forward. Their proactive intentions were rather impractical due to the decision of the US to no longer participate in the League of Nations, which had anchor effect to the somewhat impotent League.
Slide 8: Raymond Poincare
Raymond Poincaré was a highly important person during the interwar period. It was under his government that France survived its economic crisis. He levied new taxes on sales and cut the bureaucratic system. By doing this, he was able to raise the value of the Franc by an impressive 30%. He created a large amount of positivity within the country and opened the gates for rapid investment in France.

The French government played a very influential role in the positive development, which occurred in France throughout the interwar period. They were heavily involved with the expansion of the Empire. They also created a name for themselves on the world stage and expanded their alliances, as well as formulating a friendship with Germany. They were also finally successful with their reconstruction campaign after President Poincaré boosted the economy.
The Interwar period was a significantly positive period in France’s development. It began plagued with struggle and devastation, but it was also a time for creating a revolutionary establishment within the country, which did occur.
