At the beginning, it was just this chord sequence, but I had this strange feeling that it could be somehow important, and I got very impassioned and went and beavered away at it. I sat down with Freddie, and we decided what the theme should be and wrote the first verse. It's a long story, that song, but I always felt it would be important because we were dealing with things that were hard to talk about at the time, but in the world of music, you could do it."

My Bloody Valentine’s 2nd studio album was released on 4 November 1991.

After the critical and commercial (UK) success of Isn’t Anything (released in November 1988), the band’s label (Creation) wanted a quick follow-up and gave the band 5 days to record a new album.

Instead, Loveless took almost 4 years to record, 19 studios, and numerous audio engineers. Creation blamed its bankruptcy on the expensive recording sessions, while Kevin Shields disputes the claim (he argues that the label paid relatively little for the sessions).

Shields did most of the recording himself, using drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig’s previous recordings as samples, taking over bass from Debbie Googe, and playing most of Bilinda Butcher‘s guitar parts (Butcher did provide lyrics and some guitar to the album).

Loveless was hailed as a masterpiece when it was released, and while it failed to find a mainstream audience in the US, it peaked at #7 in the UK. It has since been named as one of the greatest albums of all-time (placed at #18 in NME’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”).

My Bloody Valentine would not release another album for almost 12 years.
