Ah yes, the classic Japanese horror that is Gojira. King of monsters, destroyer of Tokyo...and last hope for mankind? Say what?
Let's start at the beginning. The original Godzilla story is decades old, but an American version was made in 1999 where the radioactive-spawned lizard made his way to Manhattan, NY, and promptly wreaked havoc before building a nest full of more than 200 eggs. But yes, he's portrayed as a nuisance that must be stopped at all costs.
The new 2014 version? Godzilla's appearance is back to the classic look from when the story originated, but I was disappointed in the new movie. I was skeptical about Godzilla's new appearance as it was (the first one I ever saw was the 1999 version, and actually that's the only one I've ever seen, not even the 2000 version), but this two-hour long movie showed maybe 30 minutes worth of its namesake. Some creature my fiancé called Mothra made an appearance first (and he was hideous to say the least), and then after he hatches, this Japanese (yes, they did go back to the original roots, beginning in Japan and then going all over the world, eventually landing in the States) scientist talks all about Godzilla and says that he can destroy both Mothra and his newly-hatched female mate. So basically, Godzilla is played up as a hero in this movie, and we see more of Mothra and his mate, and the military's attempts to stop all three of them, than we actually do of him. So to put it bluntly, I was kind of disappointed
I much prefer the 1999 version with Matthew Broderick than this one. It was funnier, we see more of Godzilla, and he's the only giant mutated creature in the movie, played up as a monster instead of a hero as the only hope to destroy other monsters.
