Robert Sugden: Christopher Smith (1999)
Well they’d be better learning the real facts of life. No money equals no roof, no food.
And there it goes, disappointment for Robert as Sarah tells him and Andy they can’t go on the school trip and blaming it on Jack. Also, Jack and Sarah continue to fracture, both blowing up at each other over the state of things and their marriage.
Scene 1: Robert and Andy are very excited about the France trip (it’s Andy’s first trip and for Robert he mentions how ‘brilliant’ they are, he had a ‘right laugh in footie tour’). And once again Andy is on about girls (‘those French girls are supposed to be dead sexy’). After the boys leave Jack and Sarah get to talking about not having the money.
Sarah: We’ll find the money.
Jack: No we won’t. We haven’t got it. You do the accounts for heaven sakes. I’m not just some farmer on the news complaining, Sarah. This is me. Us. You know we’re just keeping afloat.
Sarah: It’s an important part of their education.
Jack: Well they’d be better learning the real facts of life. No money equals no roof, no food.
Scene 2: Bringing tea to Jack, Sarah mentions the final reminder for the feed bill came in the post (‘That’s no problem. Just wave your magic wand over it like you with the school trip’ Jack says back). Sarah admits she was wrong but it doesn’t matter to Jack. The teacher must have been told and the boys’ hopes were raised. The talk turns harsher where, in the end, Sarah leaves but not before the tea goes down the drain.
Sarah: I said they can go because I didn’t want them to miss out. I only want what’s for them.
Jack: And why you’d think I do this!! From sunup till sunset seven days a week! Alright, alright. I might not be very good at it. I might fail on all counts. But at least I’m trying.
Sarah: Oh, don’t be so self righteous, Jack. This isn’t just about YOU. It’s about us. We’re supposed to be a partnership.
Scene 3: Sarah has the fortunate position of telling the boys they can’t go on the trip. At first, Robert thinks she’s winding them up but then realizing she isn’t, it comes down to Jack. He’s not happy to be stuck at the farm (aka dump) for six weeks. Jack himself isn’t interested in dinner while Andy consoles Sarah. Scene 3 and 4 combined in the clip.
Sarah: Maybe next year.
Robert: It’s me dad, innit.
Andy: Oh, Rob. At least we’re gonna break for summer soon.
Robert: Yeah, we’ll be stuck in this DUMP for six weeks.
Jack: Alright, son?
Robert: Get lost.
Scene 4: The tension between Jack and Sarah is thick. Jack wants to go to the pub but Sarah reminds him they can’t afford it. Then they really go at it as it’s Sarah’s turn to rip into him about it being down to his ego and bringing up all their past hardships which have led to be further apart then ever.
Sarah: I didn’t put the blame on you, did I.
Jack: Didn’t have to. They know I’m the breadwinner.
Sarah: Oh, give it a rest Jack! You’re not bothered about the school trip at all are you?!! You’re being like this because your male ego’s been dented!
