You know the most raging aspect of it all is when we called it out for what it is they told us we are being toxic wait for the writers to develop it. You Robron fans are always complaining. But it was a joke from the start!! What a sick disgusting approach to a serious matter! it was a joke all along.
Social media in general has become very toxic especially on Twitter. Instead of muting tags or accounts, you have those that have to have their say when we are in fact making legitimate claims about the show and the lads. I get you might not like them but stay in your own lanes. And it’s the same ones that complain about us that turn around and do the same when it happens to the characters THEY like.
When this plot was first introduced, it’s not surprising it was not well received first with the out of nowhere prison hubby and then how the plot played out, not as the serious one inferring Robert was a lackey from an earlier mention in the show (if we had to go there at all) but as stuck between two men he didn’t want to meet. All the careful buildup of trauma of months before to that? Of course we’d want our voices heard.
Quite frankly, I’m getting mixed signals about this. He’s a “big bad” but it’s a funnier arc this time. There’s a kidnapping, web of lies, Vinny will be triggered by his violent nature, a “life or death” situation for Lewis……. I watch dark comedies all the time. In principle, I don’t have a problem with mixing comedy with an otherwise serious story or scenario. I just don’t think it worked with this character in the last story he was involved in. The biggest flaw is they want to disregard the bad things he’s done and pretend he’s just some complex and quirky guy.
And that there is the problem. They are washing away the seriousness of what he did to the lads and Liam as well as the armed robbery as ‘insufficient evidence’ when in fact there is more than enough evidence to lock him up once more but sure, let’s have the funny bloke ‘bond’ with the son who doesn’t know he’s his psycho daddy (yet, we are STILL waiting for any kind of contact between the lads and Sebastian who’s barely, if ever, mentioned). Those first couple of scenes with him should’ve have continued as his main persona… anger that was hair-triggered, physically violent (that should’ve been shown on screen to reinforce) and having little respect for Robert (calling him ‘she’, manipulating him with lies, etc). Bringing in the extra levels of so-called humor in what should’ve been a serious story based on trauma AND allowing the actor too much leeway in molding him just doesn’t cut it. He is still tied to a horrible time in Robert’s life and he still manipulated him into staying in prison longer than he should have. It’s hard to get past all of that and see a so-called funny guy as his main persona when the rest will more than likely be ignored. How a kidnapping and triggering Vinny falls under funny is beyond my understanding 🤷♀️.
Journo Chloe replied to someone on twitter that Kev story was always a joke from the start??? Wtf ?
so like the self-stab was a joke and the sword and the rifle and the hostage situation joke ? Am I dumb as fuck who is not getting the joke here or is the show really disgusting? What kind of gaslighting is this ?
I saw that response and it’s on the show for taking something dark and making light of Robert’s time in prison (they did the same when he had been roofied). And even Vic’s response to Robert wanting protection in there from the constant bullying and beatings was him prostituting himself which again was very crass writing.
At the time, they also had the slavery plot or some aspect of it going so another heavy plot (they are doing that now)? So Robert’s next story, instead of the heavily anticipated ptsd one, was what we got. They could have easily shifted anything to do with prison for later or have it brought up in therapy and anyone actually from prison show up in the village a year or two later to regress progress he’d be making. But to make light of it with Robert juggling two ‘husbands’ that only Vic knew of… it was the wrong call especially with what we saw early on with the nightmares (one based on being touched), depression, J being able to manipulate Robert the way he did and so on. That is not something to make light of, it’s legitimate trauma that should’ve been handled with proper respect. But this Robert, so what else is new 😒😔. No friends, no therapy or no understanding from others unless you’re Aaron and Vic (and not always from her even).
At least on my dash, when the Sadie return leaked, most were so intrigued or excited by the news. But when we found out Jimmy was being killed off and she will be involved, that quickly went away. The only thing I’ve seen people getting hyped about lately and Emmerdale found a way to immediately ruin it. There are no new stories to tease because this Cain and Charity dramas are never ending. They have Robron, a couple who actually generate buzz and they’re nonexistent. Their returning “fan favorite” is a buffoon and will be paired up with a barely there character. What are we doing?
Things can sour very quickly when it comes to this show. They did it with the news of J being cast as an unknown Sugden brother. The first articles were thrilling to read but when the real story was released hours later (that he was gay and Aaron’s very obvious new love interest), all the excitement dropped dramatically and it was worse than expected (with the horrid remakes of the lad scenes). The same goes for Sadie. It was welcomed by most but as soon as it was tied to the upcoming UNNECESSARY killing of the one the last living Kings (there’s still Scarlett, please have the IIC forget she exists for her own safety 🙏), once again the initial excitement has waned. Why sacrifice a longstanding character for what will more than likely be a short-term gimmick return?
And what’s been teased as coming up is once again centered on the unusual suspects/characters rather than spreading the wealth around with their cast. Cain and Charity are misery plots that will dominate the show as well as the powerpoint butler/Tates. There’s nothing light to counteract the darkness (and I do not include that character that is turning up next week with zero remorse for what he’s done in his life or to who he’s done it to… you cannot rewrite the facts that were shown on screen and expect most of us to embrace him as decent and worthy of redemption without putting any effort into it).
I get it. ITV has had to make major cuts overall but with that the overall quality shouldn’t have dropped as much as it has. Basing the on-screen changes on external feedback rather than concentrating on the roots of the show and building off of that has failed. What also has failed is taking an umbrella story and integrating so many twists to it that the original concept has been gutted to something unrecognizable and unpalatable. Using the same characters day in day out, weeks and months on end also has been a poor decision. Rewriting plots that literally occurred recently is a major faux pas meaning the storyliners have limited imagination to outline the plots properly. The lads are the show’s best assets with a big fanbase but they have been curtailed to supporting other plots (or used as springboards for them and disappearing afterwards). Ryan mentioned a while back that he was excited about what was coming this year but that was before all of these changes took place. I do wonder if what he had been excited about was postponed or totally scrapped at this point.
Something needs to change not only for ED but for Corrie from what I’m hearing. TIIC are forgetting what soaps are all about and that will not bring new viewers in (and live ratings will not increase much since there is the ITVx/YT early releases). Going back to basics will and that means looking back at their past and using it properly not twisting it into something it is not. It’s gonna be a hard lesson to swallow (pfft, if they even get there) if they expect positive word of mouth and awards for that matter.
Their constant desperation to be running some other type of show instead of the one with 50 years of history they are actually tasked with only makes me feel more pessimism tbh. Sorry, it's hard right now.
And therein lies the problem. Instead of looking back at the show’s rich history to understand what made it work so successfully, they are relying on feedback that is outside the niche of soaps. In doing so, they are fracturing/dissolving the very essence of what soaps are about. If I wanted to watch a crime drama, I’d watch a crime drama not remold a soap to be one. Soaps are an ensemble that work together to bring varying pov’s into diverse stories to make them as robust and engaging as possible. Removing that essence just makes it all mechanical, without heart. You also need a balance of light and dark but when it’s mostly dark…
I really wanna bring optimism but I need something more than the crumbs that we’ve been handed by arch enemy PowerPoint Shaw these last few months as to what’s to come moving forward with the lads. It wouldn’t take much, just something that’s more substantive than a line here and there and that’s more than a concept based on a US show.
There’s also Jimmy’s death which I hope will have some impact for Robert.
Look at us being clowns and hoping 😆. The barn fires have been directly impacting Robert and now he’s nowhere to be seen. The psycho husband is coming back and he doesn’t seem to be around for that, initially, either. Dead Jimmy will not even enter Robert’s story bubble.
Yeah, definitely 🤡 ing when it comes to Jimmy since they barely exchanged a line since Robert returned. It becomes very frustrating when you have the foundation built and bricks were being laid but it’s all torn down in the end, and those moments can’t be made up later, forever lost.
Too many storylines have been started and turned into something else, there's so much that has to come out or be wrapped up. There's Sadie returning. K*v and whatever happens whilst he's here and when he goes. The farm 'wars.' Charity and the revelation of the baby secret and what Dr. Todd has done to her. It's looking pretty obvious what the rest of the year holds...
It’s feels very Dingle-centric with the Tates (plus the PowerPoint butler) coming in a close second. The rest (including the lads) are fighting for reasonable airtime amongst all that. Maybe if LS would actual give more than a few throwaway lines about them, my overall outlook for them would be boosted.
Surely they must finally get the A plot and proper pov, it will be over 6 months at that stage of being in other people’s stories.
I have zero faith in the show at this point (Robert’s ptsd continuing to be ignored as is Aaron’s own psychological abuse by J). They start a plot and drop it when they seem to get bored of it, have no closure planned or just want to go in a different direction. I hope they’ll get pov’s and depth but it’ll all depend on the plot(s) they’ll be involved in. The Sarah angle and the new Sugden has potential but the farm wars… nope. Sebastian is key really but when they’ll actually decide to bring him back is the big question…
A van pulling up sounds like Lewis is about to get abducted but surprise! It’s just a guy with cakes! Yay! You see because he may look tough and scary on the outside but he’s actually as sweet as his cakes:)
Lewis will be so thrilled to see the funny one so abruptly that he will change his plans ready and willing to listen to more advice while Vinny will see the psycho as he truly is.
I’m leaning toward it not happening this year. We have the so-called farm wars and whatever form that will translate onto the screen. There’s Sarah wondering over to the Sugden side ‘for a time’ and whoever they are bringing into the Sugdens to boost their numbers. There’s also Jimmy’s death which I hope will have some impact for Robert. And there’s their wedding (will it be secondary to another plot or will they be allowed to be A plot?).
One issue for me currently pushing things to next year is how isolated they’ve made Robert and this bs about him being responsible for Coira’s ills (Moira’s imprisonment and ‘taking’ their farm from them). Sebastian could be easily used as a pawn against both of them by Joe and others. There’s already gonna be built-in angst because of the years missed out but messing with a child’s head because of hatred against the two of them…
When are we properly expecting them back? I know there might be a chance we get them in between but it does seem Danny was at work the other week.
Is third week of July too optimistic?
Week 26 (wo 22-Jun) potentially looks to be around the time Danny came back briefly to film before going on holiday (or is that too soon?). Mid/late July is the timeframe I’m expecting them to be on more frequently (whatever that will mean in this new normal for them and gaining their own pov’s).
At least it looks like his return is a Z plot. It does involve Lewis, after all. I hope it stays that way if he’ll be around for a bit. I can’t imagine anything or anyone else will be allowed as A plot with Cain and Charity around.
More than likely he shows up at the tale end of the Friday episode (the midnight spoilers/Digital Spy alluding to the specific day) and will unfortunately be more prominent the following week, C plot. If we are lucky, we might get a brief glimpse of the lads in week 26 being happy in his sights 😈 before they disappear again 😔.
