“Time to end this, boys!” John’s voice is heavy with hatred.

Dean puts his finger to his lips and Sam squeezes his eyes shut, furiously shaking his head.

Dean remembers the motel only a handful of hours ago, where he had done the same thing.

Before.

He instinctively mouths, “Trust me.”

And Sam shakes his head again. He’s clearly terrified.

Dean watches Sam breathing rapidly.

Too rapidly.

Dean’s heart breaks just a little.

“Boys!” John’s voice is even more demanding. Both boys are startled by the sudden sharpness. They both jump. “I’m gonna find you. You may as well come out!” He turns a little, his back to the boys as he scours the salvage yard.

Sam takes the opportunity. Without a word to Dean, he stands and runs as fast as he can away from the house. Through the junkyard. Out the gate. Out of sight.

Dean has no time to stop him.

John turns back just in time to see Sam disappear around the corner.

“Gotcha,” John says quietly.

Dean waits until his dad passes the woodpile before he jumps up behind him.

“No. No you don’t,” says Dean.

The sound of a gun being cocked is clearly audible in the cold air.
