Companionable Silence

She’s on a date with silence and I am third-wheeling it, trying not to watch as the topics turn heavy, weight the air around them. I can’t find a way to break into the conversation, shake her eye contact with the abyss. Should I leave them to it? Excuse myself with a mutter and a scraped-back chair? My conversation cue cards left me unprepared for this. I’m trying to think of something to say, torn between hoping she will or won’t notice.
