quarantine fic rec in honor of 1daaw

hi, friends! 

it’s been so long since i actually sat down and read fic and what better time to catch up on all of these wonderful writings than when we’re all stuck at home. over the past few weeks i’ve been slowly compiling this list, and while i haven’t even made a dent in my to-reads, i decided to post what i have so far in honor of 1daaw. as i read more over the next few weeks since we’ll still be stuck at home, i will try to compile more fic rec lists as i feel like this is a great way to show some love to my favorite stories and authors. i haven’t had a chance to reach out to all these amazing writers to tell them how much i love these stories, so if you’re on here, take this as my official love letter to you. 🥰

niall fics:

and they’ll hang us in the louvre by @in-madhouses​ 

there is SO MUCH about this fic that i absolutely fell in love with. the enemies to lovers trope, the characters, the plot, and the absolutely fantastic writing are all to die for. basically, niall and his friends (aka some of the 1d boys) are actors on a television adaptation of the marauders (so already i’m like !!!!!!) and aahna is a recurring guest star on the show. the two of them just grate at each others’ nerves the whole time they have to shoot together and it’s all quick-witted banter and heated moments and exquisite characterization. aahna is unapologetically herself, not afraid to tell it like it is (the rant about the neocolonialism of southeast asian cuisine in the prologue was the best thing ever) and she’s definitely up there as one of my favorite OFCs of all time. 

this story is witty and fun and a perfect light-hearted read. inm is such a gorgeous writer and some of the lines in this story read like poetry. i literally found myself stopping on multiple occasions and going wow. honestly, what a treat. inm also has a self-isolation drabble series that i’ve been meaning to get into and i can’t wait to start reading that as well. 

but oh, my heart still burns by @houseofbrokenhearts​ 

as i started to read this story, i had the biggest smile on my face. it begins with shane and niall as young, inseparable best friends and continues on into their adulthood in which things get complicated, as they always do in these scenarios. it’s nostalgic and innocent and sort of whimsical. i laughed at the part where shane is upset at not getting a cell phone when niall does because it reminded me of being a kid in a similar situation. also the scenes where they reunite after years of being apart? impeccable. 

this story has beautiful writing. i felt as though i could feel every emotion as shane was feeling them, and once i started i just couldn’t put this down. it has not been updated in a while which, as a writer who has also left her fics only to update months or years later, i understand that life gets in the way or we may lose motivation or whatever. but, whatever the future holds for this story, i just want to put it out there that i so so so adore it, and niall and shane are one of those fic pairings that i will possibly never stop thinking about. 

why did we climb and fall so far by @niallismymuse​

first of all, holy shit. when i finished reading this i literally sobbed my eyes out and then laid in bed staring at the ceiling for an hour. this fic is only four chapters and it made me feel so many things. at points, i was looking at my screen with heart eyes because niall and ellie are so in love and then i was laughing because their banter is the cutest and then all of a sudden i’m getting my fucking heart broken. 

second, i think it’s a testament to how wonderful a writer shelly is to be able to elicit these emotions so powerfully, taking us all on a rollercoaster of intense feelings. the prose on this is just phenomenal and there were lines that absolutely took my breath away. i am so picky with what i read sometimes because fiction has this ability to take you places you may not be prepared to go (definitely a trigger warning on this for heavy themes), but i am so happy i found this because it was such beautiful writing. i can’t even begin to imagine the energy and emotional willpower it must have taken to write this, so to shelly, thank you for sharing your words with us. this story is definitely one i won’t be forgetting anytime soon, and i can’t wait to dive into the rest of your stories. 

harry fics:

matchmaking for experts by @booksncoffee​

eriza is one of the most prolific writers of the 1dff community and her consistency and drive is something i enormously admire. this story is just one of many really fantastic ones from her and i urge everyone to go check out her masterlist--you won’t be disappointed. 

but anyway, back to matchmaking for experts--it’s only one chapter in and i am already hooked. there is so much to unpack in just one installment: harry’s apparent tense relationship with his father, the colorful workplace environment of the matchmaking service, the slight mutual pining between maia and harry that i anticipate will only grow as this story goes on and i am hype for it. i’m right there with the rest of the matchcierge staff in lowkey giving maia and harry’s relationship the side eye and rooting for them. all in all, it’s a fantastic beginning. eriza, you are so talented, and i can’t wait to see where this story goes.

first off, p is wonderful and brilliant and she deserves all the praise in the world. this story is the perfect collision of my two favorite worlds (bollywood and 1d) and i absolutely adore it so far. i don’t even think i have enough words to describe how much i love this story and its characters. literally, if ishika were a real person i’d want to protect her with my whole life. her characterization and history are crafted so so well; she’s vulnerable and strong and determined. i can’t wait to watch how she grows throughout this story. 

also, there are moments that literally have me staring at my screen with the biggest heart eyes: ishika making harry taste pani puri, harry being so soft and gentle with her at the beach and at her fitting, the pining. i am literally so in love. p also writes this story with such care and precision that it shows. it is so intricately crafted with so many layers and is just such a pleasure to read. she also updates so often that i am in awe of her drive. i have to dive into the rest of her stories, which i know are absolutely amazing even if i haven’t read them yet, and i’m looking forward to that as well. p, what a beautiful story. i can’t wait to see where it goes.

WHAT IS IT

A challenge in which an author must submit three different movies they would like to base their story on and in turn they will receive one movie of their choice. With help along the way from betas and graphic artists, authors will then have two months to complete their challenges before submitting it to this blog for posting.

HOW IT WORKS

Decide on three potential movies that you would like to base your challenge on. 

Use the linked Google Form below to sign up. You must include the three movies you would like to write about and ensure your preferred choice is listed first.

In return, you will be given one movie that you must then use as inspiration to write your challenge. You have free reign on which boy you choose as the romantic interest, the characters, and the plot apart from what was given to you. As this is not an exchange, you don’t need to worry about adhering to someone else’s wishes.

About halfway through the writing period, there will be the opportunity to submit a preview of your challenge if you wish to share anonymously what you are working on.

All challenges must be submitted by the deadline, then soon after they will be posted over the next week or so, depending on the amount of entries.

Challenges will be posted to this blog first, but once they have all been posted, you are free to post it on other platforms or to your own blog.

As stated, this is a One Direction Fanfiction Challenge, so that means all challenges must include at least one member of One Direction.

1DAAW Fic Rec

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t do a great job of keeping up with fic on Tumblr (or honestly anywhere as of recently). But, in honor of 1D Author’s Appreciation Week, I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite fics that I’ve read (that I remember haha). I’m sure there are many other’s I’ve read over the years that I’ve left out, and in the process of looking for these I actually found some fics in my likes that I need to get to! But anyway check out some of these amazing writers and their beautiful fics, and then send them some love! 

Niall:

Great Expectations- @stylishmuser 

At 24, Gia Malhotra is absolutely sure of two things in her life: she will never live up to her mother's overbearing expectations and she is damn good at her job. Being one of the best event planners in Hollywood is who she is and because of that, Gia doesn't take risks. Ever. Until one particularly nasty fight with her parents and a bottle and a half of champagne later, she ends up sleeping with a guest at her latest event - who just so happens to be, yes, the Niall Horan. Gia never expects to see Niall again, until her best friend looks at her nervously over a positive pregnancy test two months later in her bathroom. A story about an unexpected pregnancy, what it means to be a mother and a daughter, and the understanding that expectations are almost never meant.

Everything that P writes is a masterpiece but this is probably my favorite! Her attention to detail is incredible and she writes her characters in a way that allows you to truly get to know them. Niall and Gia are the most adorable couple and you’ll find yourself rooting for them from start to finish!

Mim Marcus hasn’t written a word since the day Niall Horan broke her heart. Niall, on the other hand, has done nothing but.

I remember reading this fic long ago and falling in love with it and then rediscovered it a little over a year ago. I love the unique writing style and clever story line! And if you think Niall is a beautiful songwriter, just wait til you imagine him as an author *wink wink*

Why Do We Climb to Fall So Far- @niallismymuse

After completing his third wildly successful solo world tour, Niall Horan wants nothing more than to go home and relax. His wife, Elise, has something else in mind: a surprise vacation to Hawaii. Even though they normally plan all of their trips together, Niall shrugs it off – because how can he possibly know what’s hiding beneath the surface?

Looking for a tearjerker? This story made me ugly cry but is beautifully written! Binge read it in one night...just make sure you have your tissues handy.

You’ve Opened Up My Heart- @harrysdodgyankles

In which the holidays, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and one Physician Assistant’s heart of gold are enough to make Dr. Sofia Riaz, MD realize what she’s been missing all along.

I may be a little biased putting this on here considering Harry has my future career in this fic, but this absolutely filled my medical AU kick. Plus, Harry with children? It’s a must read!

Taking place in a dystopian future, Harry lives a secluded life with an affliction that he loathes and keeps him from sleeping at night. In order to survive the treacherous world he's forced into, his only choice is to suffer silently inside of his own mind... until he finally meets the one person he's dreamed of for his entire life and then everything changes completely.

Trust me when I say, you’ve never read a story quite like this one. This fic will keep you on the edge of your seat, and is the perfect mix of action and romance. If you love dystopian novels, this ones for you! (This fic is on Wattpad)

Matchmaking For Experts- @booksncoffee

Harry and Maia work at a dating agency. Everyone they have set up is perfect together but the only people they refuse to match are themselves. Despite the glances, the casual touches and the subtle (and not so subtle) flirting, Maia and Harry are strictly platonic. At least that's what they tell everyone and it's what they tell themselves. 

This only has one chapter so far but I’m already in love! The concept really peaked my interest. Plus, I’m a sucker for a slow burn, and I can already tell this is gonna be one of those fics! Can’t wait to read more!

what is one idea that you've always wanted to write but haven't had the chance? 

I think the one idea that I’ve wanted to write but haven’t is an Enemies to Lovers fic. I’ve never found an idea solid enough to write it.

what was the initial inspiration/idea behind each of your fics?

If The World Was Ending was originally a workshop piece that was written with Harry in mind as the main male character. Coming off the song “Be My Mistake” by The 1975 and “If The World Was Ending” by JP Saxe and Julia Michaels. I liked the idea of characters feeling as though if the world was ending they would have to be together, simply because their love never ended, and how characters could be toxic to themselves and not each other. Harry and Delilah are messy and shouldn’t be in a relationship at the beginning, but they learn.

Loving You’s the Antidote has multiple sources of inspiration. Originally a story I started years ago (and by years, I mean, around 2016) and could never find a plot I liked. Going through the original storyline, I found parts that I really liked, kept those, and took aspects from other pieces that I started writing - like the main character being a painter - and meshed them together. Hearing “Golden” gave me the title. All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven is a really big inspiration for this - especially the characters’ struggle with their mental health - and the main character connects with the novel a lot. Wanting to write something that had to do with mental health, I really focused on how the book internalized their thoughts, and I’ve worked with that!

what has been the hardest scene for you to write? 

One of the scenes that have been hardest to write are the scenes where the character has an anxiety attack (and Amelie has a lot in the beginning), but there is a particular scene in Chapter Ten that breaks my heart for Harry and Amelie.

what has been a favourite to write? 

Harry and Amelie having sex on his birthday was my favorite to write because it really shows their trust in each other. Harry picking Amelie up for the first time. Many of their firsts.

which side character is your fave to write?

Oh my god, in Loving You’s the Antidote, for sure, Phoebe is everything. Her attitude, her relationship with Amelie and Harry, her humour. Phoebe is really a mood constantly.

what do you think is the hardest part about writing? 

Writers really work hard to create stories that they love and that others will love. Having no feedback is really difficult because you don’t know if people are connecting the way you think they will. ALWAYS LIKE AND REBLOG.

what is the fic you are most proud of and why? 

Loving You’s the Antidote is the fic I’m most proud of. Characters in the fic, especially Amelie, go through so much and the development that they show throughout the story is really important. Overwhelmingly so, it shows that there’s someone out there that cares and that will listen and respect you, and that’s so important to talk about. Amelie’s mental health is a heavy discussion that is had with Harry throughout the story, and it’s all a learning curve. Out of everything that I’ve written, I feel as though Loving You’s the Antidote has the most to say.

who are three authors you admire?

@stylishmuser is so lovely, representative, creative, and outdoing all that can be expected for content creators and writers, at the moment. @all-things-fic really has a way with dialogue and creates a scene that really makes you yearn for the characters. @adashofniallandasprinkleoflunacy, andrea, well, there is no one on this platform or any platform that writes smut quite like this girl; and the uniqueness of her characters - don’t even get me started.
