One Direction made me the person I am today.
I found them when I was newly out and so unsure of what the future held. I had been so certain before— I was engaged at twenty-four and thought my life was answered. When I came out, I jumped down into the unknown. This fandom became my safe place to land.
I’ve met the most amazing people. Formed the most amazing friendships. I’ve made mistakes, acted like a goddamn fool, grown from crashing and burning, grown from loving and losing. I’ve found that some people stay, even when you act like an asshole. I’ve found that I’m not perfect or the best or even all that cool, let’s be honest.
But I’ve also learned what love is. I’ve seen it in action time and time again. I’ve seen it rise to the occasion, give selflessly and endlessly, mourn in community when tragedy strikes, rally around worthy causes, support the underdogs and underestimated, and stand for what’s right without fail.
So to you reading this— you have been an incalculably crucial part of my growing up, and I love you more than you could ever know.
And to the boys. My boys. OUR boys. Thank you, thank you, thank you times ten million for every sleepless night, every scream of glee, every lyric and note of your hearts and souls— they saved me.
Cheers to ten years.
