Embrace
Subgenre(s): Emotional hardcore/emocore Wave(s): 1st Location: Washington D.C., USA Years Active: 1985-1986 Recommended Album(s): Embrace (1987) Members: Ian MacKaye (lead vocals), Michael Hampton (guitar), Ivor Hanson (drums), Chris Bald (bass) Spotify Monthly Listeners: 22.8k About: Embrace is one of the most well-known 1st wave emo bands. Lead singer Ian MacKaye was already known for the hardcore punk band Minor Threat, and would go on to start and join several more bands, the most well known being Fugazi. He's also known for having a major role in the start of the straight edge scene. The rest were former members of MacKaye's brother's (Alec MacKaye) former band, The Faith. Embrace had a major role in the 1985 Revolution Summer, along with Dag Nasty, Rites of Spring, Beefeater, Gray Matter, and others. They are generally considered one of the very first emo bands. Following the project, Hampton would collaborate with members of Rites of Spring (often dubbed the first emo band) to create another semi-well known emocore project known as One Last Wish.

About!
Hello! I'm the owner of this account. You can call me Jamie, or just the blog name. I use they/them pronouns. I have a special interest in emo music and made this blog to share it with others, and to educate other emos about some parts of the scene they might not be aware of! Important note - I am chronically ill and my energy levels vary a lot so I may be a little slow to respond to your ask, but I will get to it as soon as I have the energy!

Emo Waves Explanation
What is your favourite emo music?
SO GLAD YOU ASKED
I’m a huge fan of 1st and 2nd wave emo, though 3rd and 4th also have a very special place in my heart . 5th wave isn’t my favorite but I definitely enjoy a few 5th wave bands.
Here’s a quick lil guide for anyone who doesn’t know the waves:
1st wave - 1985-1991, emotional hardcore
2nd wave - 1992-2001, Midwest emo, skramz, and a bit of emo pop punk
3rd wave - 2002-2008 (some 3rd wave bands kept making music a little later though), mainstream emo pop punk
4th wave - 2009-2017ish, Midwest emo revival
5th wave - 2018ish-now, a huge mix of not only emo subgenres like Midwest and skramz but also some traditionally non-emo stuff like bedroom pop and shoegaze
Here’s a few specific bands/albums I really enjoy:
-Cap’n Jazz (the first 2nd wave band!) (I’ve seen them live btw)
-Rites of Spring (the first emo band ever!)
-“Chaos is Me” and “Dance Tonight, Revolution Tomorrow!” by Orchid (2nd wave skramz/emoviolence)
-Moss Icon (1st wave)
-“Diary” by Sunny Day Real Estate (2nd wave Midwest)
-“Translating the Name” by Saosin (3rd wave emo/metalcore)
-Suis La Lune (I think they’re technically 5th wave?)
-“The Last Thing You Forget”, “Shed”, and “Floral Green” by Title Fight (those are all 4th wave technically? 2009, 2011, and 2012 so on the early side of 4th)
-“I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love” and “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge” by My Chemical Romance (3rd wave (note: I like their later albums too but they aren’t emo))
Okay that’s probably enough… I have ~50 emo artists/artists who’ve made emo music downloaded to Amazon music and I’m actively adding more so if anyone wants specific recommendations please feel free to ask!!!
Hello emos of tumblr
Could yall please go listen to 1st and 2nd wave stuff if you haven’t?
Emo did not start in the 2000s, It started in 1985! I know a lot of you know this, but if you didn’t already it’s okay. I just hope you make an effort to give the roots of a genre you love a chance!
Don’t know where to start? Try Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, Cap’n Jazz, The Promise Ring, and Orchid!
People who do like 1st/2nd wave, could you put some of your favorite bands from those waves in the replies/reblogs?
