Nathaniel is quite scary to look at, what with the scars and the robot leg and whatnot, so Duncan doesn't trust him- until one night, when MacCready is out running an errand, leaving Nate and Duncan behind. Duncan wakes up in the middle of the night after having a nightmare, and has to go to Nate to ask for help because Dad isn't there. That night, Nate stays up and talks him out of it, and from that point they're inseparable as father and son.

Ok I firmly believe that Curie was the one who helped Danse through his identity crisis. Because she told him what it was like to be a robot, feeling and thinking only what she was programmed to, and then how amazing and free she felt as a synth, and how for the first time she felt truly real as a person. It showed Danse that just because he has a few mechanical parts doesn't mean all his thoughts and feelings aren't still his own.
