🔥🔥🔥 thank you birthday twin 😌
who ya gonna call? (1/??)
Beginning Next
let me tell you, this fucking thing was a doozy
i tried to start it four different times, didnt like what i wrote, eventually did, i struggled very badly fsr writing billy but i got over it, and i got confused by the timeline bc of the fact that school years take place between two years so that was fun
i did find out two things from the wiki, eddie’s character was revealed on my birthday in 2020, and the exact type of van he has which wouldve saved me so much googling earlier
something i already knew but thought i’d share anyway, stranger things was actually filmed in my home state, only a few hours from where i live, aint that cool?
anyway, i will stop bugging you and get to what yall actually came here for, the story, so here's sixish pages of storybuilding
-007-
i swear to god if one more girl flirts with me today i am going to go nuclear.
Steve had his arms crossed with a pout after handing the note over to Eddie, and the sight was so cute Eddie couldn’t do anything but laugh, “Well, what do you expect? Your clothes actually fit you now and people are liking what they’re seeing.”
After about three weeks of friendship between the two boys, Eddie had finally had enough of Steve’s mismatched clothing style and taken him, and Robin of course, to an old thrift store he loved in Indianapolis run by the family of an old friend. The three of them were then finally able to pick out Steve his own wardrobe, so all of the old clothes he was wearing could finally go back to Jonathan and Hopper where they belonged.
And Eddie didn’t want to brag, but they had done a pretty good job at making Steve finally look a bit more like himself. His new clothes consisted mainly of sweaters and old tshirts, as it seems Steve was drawn to softer things, but he made it look good, even with his hair that seemed to be getting longer by the day. But aside from just the clothes, Steve also made it look good with the way he held himself in them.
Before, when he was living in borrowed clothes, it seemed like he was also wearing borrowed confidence, and now that his clothes were his own it was like his confidence was his own as well. He held himself higher, smiled more, there was more of an ease to the way he moved, and the difference was striking honestly.
Based on what Steve had written, Eddie assumes that he is not the only one that noticed the change and liked it.
tommy and carol were nowhere to be seen though
Reading this, Eddie raised his eyebrows in surprise, “Huh, you think they’ve finally given up on getting you to choose the popular life?”
Steve snorted in response just as Anal Andrews walked into the classroom, signaling the end of their audible conversation. Eddie just pulled out his notebook once Andrews’ back was turned and slid it over to him, knowing that he had something to say.
they didn’t give up just found a new target
Eddie raised an eyebrow at the words, and Steve shrugged.
i dont know they were bugging some other guy when i saw them in the hallway this morning, he looked into it so i just kept walking
They looked at each other and shrugged, counting their blessings that at least the dynamic duo had finally grown bored of harassing them.
and hey, maybe thats just what you gotta do about these girls too
i mean back in freshman year when i got a makeover it was only like two weeks before everyone started ignoring me again
guess they got used to me
Steve let out another one of those soft little laughs that Eddie was only becoming more and more enamored with. He watched as the other wrote his response and then nudged him gently with a soft smile.
don’t worry eds i wont ever get used to you
And Eddie had figured that out around the end of the first week, that Steve was one of the ones that were going to stick around, but to have him actually say that, in the only way he really could right now, was almost breathtaking in a way. The warmth that it caused in Eddie was almost foreign to him, but it carried him through the rest of the class and to lunch.
As Eddie and Steve were walking to lunch, silent but comfortable in that silence, Eddie caught a glimpse of this new guy that Tommy and Carol had latched onto. He stood against the wall, Tommy and Carol to one side of him, not realizing they were talking at him more than to him, just scanning the mass of teenage bodies moving through the hall towards the lunchroom. He was handsome in a beachy sort of way, probably moved to Hawkins from somewhere on one of the coasts, but based on how he held himself and easily accepted Tommy and Carol’s shallow admiration, Eddie got the feeling that those beachy good looks hid something that was not as pretty to look at.
As if he knew that he was being talked about, the guy looked up and locked eyes with Eddie across the hallway. A shiver traveled up his spine, and he must have moved weirdly or made a sound, as Steve was immediately aware of Eddie being uncomfortable. He glanced in the guy’s direction, causing him to switch from Eddie’s eyes to his, and it made him freeze, stopping dead in his tracks in the hallway and almost causing a mass incident in the hallway.
People passing around him like water in a stream, Eddie didn’t know how long Steve and the guy held eye contact, just that after a few minutes he noticed Steve had begun to lightly tremble.
“That’s enough of that,” Eddie muttered to himself, before lightly grabbing Steve above one of his elbows, mirroring the hold that he remembered Jonathan taking the day that he and Steve had first met.
Steve seemed almost to wake up and come back to himself, looking at Eddie with wide and unfocused eyes as he was dragged away and towards the lunchroom. Upon reaching their table, Robin, who had firmly cemented herself at the table as long as Steve was, looked alarmed upon seeing the state he was in.
She stood quickly and looked over them both critically, “What happened? How long has he been like this?”
Assuming that this was just something that happened that he had yet to witness, Eddie explained the encounter in the hallway. She looked troubled by this, a furrow to her brow that wasn’t there often as she explained.
“Where he came from, before he and his sister were taken in by Hopper, this used to happen a lot there. It stopped since then, but the fact that it’s happening now…”
“Is not good,” Eddie finished lamely, grimacing when she nodded, “Is there any way I can help?”
Robin sighed, “The only thing we can really do is keep him away from the guy, but since he’s new we don’t even know his name, let alone his class schedule.”
Eddie looked worriedly to Steve, who had sat down while he and Robin were talking and was now just rubbing his temples and wincing. Unfortunately, that meant he was likely getting a migraine. Fortunately, that meant that this time Eddie did know what to do, but it wouldn’t be possible to do it here.
It was only the second week they had been friends that Eddie dealt with his first of Steve’s migraines. It was hard to tell when one happened, as the guy did not like telling people when he was hurting, and would rather just deal with it himself. More and more, Eddie wanted to find the assholes responsible for this boy’s trauma and run them over with his van.
“Here, Robin, we can skip the rest of the day today, there’s not much left of the day anyway. I’ll take Steve back to my trailer and make him lay down and hopefully rest, cause it looks like he’s getting a migraine from everything going on. You do some reconnaissance and find out more about this guy, find out why he’s having this effect on Steve, alright?”
She nodded, happy with the assignment, though he knew she wasn’t exactly happy about the fact that they were going to skip the rest of the school day. If there was anyone who believed that Eddie was going to be able to graduate, it was Robin, and she enforced that belief by telling Steve whenever he did something like skipping school or not studying for upcoming tests. Steve would then frown at him with disappointment and Eddie would immediately feel absolutely horrible about doing the thing that Robin had tattled on him for.
That was one reason Eddie had chosen to take them to his trailer, they were already planning on going there after school to study; it was just a bit of an advancement of their previously agreed upon plan.
Rather than buckle Steve into the passenger seat, Eddie just told him to lay back onto one of the blankets or bean bag chairs in the back of the van. Steve did so without argument, which is what told him more than anything that he was definitely in the beginnings of a migraine.
Driving back to the trailer park, while passing by one of the roads that lead to more suburbs, Eddie by chance glances at one of the old houses that are usually empty and by chance sees a moving van. Beside it, looking stressed beyond belief, is a thin woman with long red hair that Eddie could tell had used to be curled to rival his but now lay flat and frizzled, and a man that Eddie could smell the beer on his breath from inside the moving van.
‘Gonna have to use a new route home,’ he thought, drawing his eyes away from the couple, ‘That must be the guy’s folks.’
After seemingly forever Eddie reached Forest Hills, pulling up and parking next to the trailer before turning off the van and jumping out to help Steve out of the back. He then half carried him up the steps and through the door, having him lay down on the couch. A bed would be better, but Eddie didn’t want to put Steve in Wayne’s room, nor to see his room quite yet, and he hadn’t been able to clean his mattress in a while, so he didn’t want to put him on that anyway.
Eddie went to the kitchen to get Steve a glass of water, but upon returning found him dead asleep on the couch, snoring softly and peacefully even as he had a slight furrow to his brow that indicated he was still in some pain. Grabbing a bag of frozen cauliflower out of the freezer, Eddie put a rag over Steve’s forehead and laid the bag on top of it, the closest to an icepack he could get. It seemed to help, as his expression smoothed out and he let out a soft sigh in his sleep.
“Is this that new friend I keep hearing about?”
Eddie jumped in surprise and spun around, coming face to face with his uncle standing in the doorway of his bedroom.
“Wayne! I didn’t realize you were off today.”
Wayne raised an eyebrow at him, “I didn’ think you were off today either, but here we are.”
Eddie winced and was quick to explain their situation, as well as all relevant information about where he was from, “Honestly, we were gonna come over here after school to study anyways, this just kind of sped up those plans.”
“Kid gets you to actually study? Keep him around ‘n you’ll definitely graduate, son.”
Eddie gave a soft laugh, looking back to Steve briefly, “I’m planning on keeping him, don’t worry Wayne.”
He decided, since that was what they were planning on doing anyway, to sit down and go through his homework while Steve slept. It wouldn’t hurt, and Steve would probably be proud of him for doing so, so that was what motivated him to sit down on the floor beside the bed and get his books out from his backpack. It helped him, when he was writing campaigns or characters or even songs for the band, to sit down on the ground and spread what he was working on around him. He didn’t know why it helped, maybe because it helped him visualize everything he had to work with?
Whatever it was, it helped him work, so he was going to try it for homework as well.
And it did! By the time Steve had woken up from his nap, Eddie had finished all of his homework and was talking quietly in the kitchen with Wayne as his uncle cooked dinner. When he spotted Steve sitting up and looking at his surroundings confusedly, likely not really remembering the trip over or into the trailer, he brightened and waved.
“Heya Stevie Wonder, enjoy your nap? You feeling better?”
Steve blinked at him slowly, still waking up, before nodding tiredly with a small smile.
Eddie chuckled and got up from the table to walk over to him, “Yeah I can tell, bud. That old fart over there cooking us breakfast is my Uncle Wayne by the way.”
He said this as casually as he could, trying to not give away how important this introduction actually was to him. Eddie’s uncle was one of the only adults in his life that had consistently supported him over the years, through absolutely everything. While for Steve it was Hopper who had saved him, for Eddie it was Wayne, and that was one reason why he had been avoiding meeting the chief since he became friends with Steve.
If Hopper didn’t like Eddie, if he didn’t want Steve to hang out with him because of his past brushes with the law, then Eddie wasn’t going to make him choose. Just like Steve would never make Eddie choose between him or Wayne. The only difference is that Wayne is almost guaranteed to like the other teen, he would bet money on the fact that he probably already liked him just because he motivated Eddie to do his homework, even if he wasn’t conscious while doing so.
But there was no guarantee that Hopper would like Eddie. In fact, the exact opposite was true, more than likely the chief would dislike Eddie immediately, no matter what Robin may say to the contrary. So he’s avoiding that meeting for as long as he can, if only to prolong the inevitable and save Steve some pain for the time being.
And Steve? Steve had become so important to him over the past month or so, had fit into every part of his life so seemlessly. He went to Hellfire, invited him regularly to movie nights, and has even started coming to Corroded Coffin’s band practices. And of course he wore the shirt he got, which Eddie could not bring himself to ask for back and which Gareth and Jeff teased him mercilessly for.
So this meeting had to go well. If two of Eddie’s favorite people didn’t like each other he didn’t know what he’d do, probably melt or something.
Luckily, like he had thought, Steve had already made a good impression on Wayne just by being there, so aside from Steve’s normal awkwardness around new people there were no bumps in the road. The three of them sat around the trailer’s small dining table, eating their dinner of sloppy joes and mac and cheese, chatting almost aimlessly. Steve beamed at Eddie when he said he had done all of his homework already, and Wayne chuckled knowingly when he ducked his head with a bashful grin at the look.
“So what’re you boys doin’ for Halloween?” Wayne surprised Eddie by asking, as he had not realized his favorite holiday was so close by.
Wayne had taken the fact that Steve didn’t really speak quite well when Eddie had told him while the other was sleeping. He had told his uncle that he didn’t really know the full story, not even half of it, but that it seemed like Steve was slowly getting his voice back. He had gone from humming and laughing to vocal exclamations, expressions of happiness or excitement or surprise that he couldn’t keep to himself. It made Eddie hopeful, as it showed that Steve was recovering from his trauma, whatever it was.
Because he was still mostly nonverbal, though, Eddie had a personal little whiteboard he had taken from middle school sometime and Steve was using that to communicate, mostly because paper and sloppy joes didn’t exactly mix well.
i don’t think we’re really doing anything? the kids have been getting ready for trick or treating but rob and i haven’t talked about doing-
“What!?” Eddie’s jaw dropped at the news, “This is technically your first Halloween ever and you’re not even doing anything?”
Steve shrugged, seeming slightly confused on why he was making such a big deal out of it, so Eddie tried a different tactic to make Steve see his side.
“Are the kids making it a big deal for Jane?” he asked, waiting for Steve to nod before continuing, “Then it should be just as big a deal for you, sweetheart, maybe even bigger because you went longer without one.”
Steve seemed almost shocked by what he was saying, but that very likely could’ve been because of the pet name he had used. He had no idea where “sweetheart” came from, it had just slipped out, but he was not taking it back because it was true anyway so why should he?
“Here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna throw one of the cheesiest Halloween parties ever, okay? The whole shebang! We’ll invite the guys, Robin, Nancy and Jonathan of course-”
chrissy?
Chrissy was Eddie’s friend from Indy, though she was originally from Hawkins. They had gone to middle school together, before CPS had been called on her mother and she had gone to live with her grandmother, who ran a thrift shop in Indianapolis. They would reconnect later in life, after Eddie had first gotten his van and decided to drive to the city for a day. He had walked into the thrift store her grandmother owned, the same one they had gotten Steve’s new threads from, taken one look at each other and that was it.
She had been a lot of help with finding Steve clothes, and had also seemed to like Robin a whole lot. Steve had been quick to catch up on that fact and tell Robin, but she wouldn’t believe him.
“You little matchmaker you!” Eddie threw his head back and laughed loudly seeing the other’s shit-eating grin, “Yes I can invite Chrissy, and I’ll make sure to tell her Robin is coming too.”
Wayne laughed at their back and forth, getting up to put his empty plate in the sink, “Well, I’m fine with a party as long as y’all clean up after it, alright?”
Eddie gasped and put a hand to his chest dramatically, “Uncle Wayne! What do you take me for, a heathen?”
i will make sure he cleans up, Steve held up the whiteboard with a grin, making Wayne chuckle as Eddie gasped again even more dramatically.
“Betrayal! Betrayal of the highest order!” Steve rolled his eyes fondly at his theatrics, before wiping his whiteboard clean and beginning another sentence.
are we going to need to get costumes? the kids have been working on their ghostbusters costumes for a while and there’s only about a week before Halloween.
Giggling at the fact that the only word Steve had capitalized was the name of the holiday, Eddie waved away Steve’s concerns, “Don’t worry, costumes are encouraged but not required. That being said, I think I’ll ask Chrissy to bring something for you…”
what are you going to ask her to bring?
“That’s not important, you said the kids wanted to be the ghostbusters? Tell me about that! And more about these kids, you’ve only really told me about your sister so far.” Steve lit up at the question and began writing furiously, leaving Eddie to smile and begin plotting with Steve none the wiser…
