there is a huge array of stunning humanism and even sometimes questionable themes within maud’s i-contain-multitudes oeuvre (to what level was dick moore a dick, davy vs. dora favouritism, jims returning home, anne being happiest as a wife and not a career woman, dean priest), and every time i see a familiar discussion somewhere on my tl/fyp i just smile because i know 1. these things will continue being discussed as long as classic literature remains relevant/is itself considered valuable and is still being taught and circulated, and 2. that part of the reason these books are so immortal is to do with the nature of the very same aforementioned questions. everything wrapped up neat and tidy would be so dissatisfying, books should be full of emotional stimulation and resonance, and invite multiple interpretations.
