“Well, I’m not planning on jumping off any mountains again any time soon.” 

Just into mind-shattering, moon magic portals, he wanted to snark back, already feeling on edge from trying to unravel the mystery of her nightmares.

 As willing as he was to go with her and as unhappy as he was about her determination to do this alone, he really didn’t want another screaming match. So, he bit his tongue—after all, he was absolutely responsible for enabling her to do this, even if he had intended for her to do this with him—but his careful control of his countenance lapsed. When her eyes locked onto his again, the momentary gleam of humor fell away. 

“Guess wings wouldn’t be much help for jumping into lakes,” he said, softening the reflex that told him to talk her out of it—mostly because he knew she wouldn’t listen.
