2.7.5

This is a short chapter sort of a continuation of the themes from the last one, regarding what men and women do in those convents from last time, namely they pray. 

Hugo breaks down that act of prayer or rather gives his own philosophical evidence of God/Infinite, just incase it wasn’t clear that his argument against convents isn’t against God but against the practices of monasticism which he thinks are antiquated. He starts by the premise of their being two Infinites, one is the human soul, which he has talked about before and the other is an Infinite which is everlasting, intelligent, substantial, etc. and that according to him, is God.

He further goes on to describe why the soul too is Infinite- it too thinks, feels and has a will of its own and he makes a distinction between the Rights of Soul and the Rights of Man, we need to be concerned with humanity but also with the question of the soul - which is indirectly a question about spirituality/religion. The soul (lower infinite) is an inverse/mirror of the higher Infinite (God) with which it comes in contact with through prayers.  

And mankind is involved in this communication towards the Unknown/God, through prayers. Prayer provides a sacred ground of communication between humans and God and once again there are parallels with the barricade being a similar sacred ground: he links Myriel, the conventionist G and the barricades and the revolutionaries there in a thread through religion and politics, by giving politics an element of religiousness and vice versa for religion.

Conscience too provides a moral compass into the Unknown and we have seen that represented by various characters, especially Valjean and his attempts to be Good and virtuous. Valjean’s tempest in the head was guided by Providence and his own conscience. Hugo tells us to respect these mysterious radiances, which go towards the Unknown into darkness, but they are really going towards the Light. From talking about light associated with different characters, here we are talking about the substance of that Light.

He does not want to deny the Existence of God, because it is linked to the Soul, which is also something Hugo is concerned with. But he once again comes back to the idea of fanaticism and superstition being wrong (which is what he disapproves of in modern convents, I think). He wants to keep the mystery, to defend the incomprehensible, to work on the soul but to also guard against the practices he considers are absurd and have no use in the 19th Century.

Prayer
