Johnny Cash’s 67th studio album was released on 5 November 2002.

American IV: The Man Comes Around was the 4th in the series produced by Rick Rubin, and the last album to be released in Cash’s lifetime (he died on 12 September 2003 at the age of 71).

The album was a critical and commercial success, peaking at #22 in the US, and the first of Cash’s non-compilation albums to sell more than 500,000 copies (American IV would go on to sell nearly 3 million copies worldwide) in more than 30 years.

American IV received “Album of the Year” at the CMA Awards. “Give My Love to Rose“ received the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Peformance, and was nominated for Best Country Collaboration for “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (with Fiona Apple). The video for “Hurt” received the “Best Short Film” award (and was nominated for 7 MTV Awards, receiving Best Cinematography).
