Glass Mask’s Best Characters

So I finally read/listened to the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream today, and it made me remember the episodes in Glass Mask where they put on the play, so obviously I had to re-watch them.

I love pretty much everything about this series.  Miuchi-san is a master at her craft, and I love every character immensely, but I have a special fondness for Hayami and Ayumi - and their respective relationships to Maya.

Both have enormous respect for Maya’s talent and determination, and they never seem to waver in that faith, even when Maya does.  These couple of episodes really highlight that (32 and 33 of the 2005 anime, if you’re curious).  It is Ayumi who believes in Maya publicly first.  She gives Maya the respect she has earned (even though Maya is currently at a low point) without demeaning her, because Ayumi most of all wants to feel like she accomplished something on her own merit.  Hayami has always supported Maya.  Even when he makes his offer in the boat for her to give up the Scarlet Angel part, he knows that she will not do it.  But he half hopes she will.  

Hayami is such a delight because for all of his apparent attempts to play the antagonist in Maya’s life, he is so very obviously the White Knight.  Even when he himself doubts his own reasons and feelings, he is always, unquestioningly there for Maya and ready to support her.  For a man with such a stringent reputation and in such a cut-throat business, he shows immense respect for and humility toward the people he makes his living off of.  And man is that refreshing.

Ayumi is a delight to me because there was every possibility that this would end up being one of those toxic female-to-female relationships where the superior/richer girl looks down on and tortures the poor girl who must climb up with her own two hands.  But it doesn’t!  And that is so wonderfully refreshing!  Because these two are rivals - but in the most genuine and respectful way I think I’ve ever seen this kind of relationship portrayed.  They want the same thing, they are, if not equal in skill and talent, very close to it.  They could antagonize each other to no end, make life miserable for each other - and they don’t!  They in fact support each other.  

Maya on her own is a great character - she is delightfully innovative, amusingly naïve and refreshingly honest.  And yet, it is as much her as her relationships that make her a compelling character.  

I really hope Miuchi-san is able to properly end the series one day soon.  I’ve really come to love this series, and I would love to know how the chips will fall, when all is said and done.  (And also I really want to see more MayaxHayami moments, tbh).

Does anyone else remember Blood+?

I loved that show so much, I’ve read a couple versions of the manga too, and I am itching to talk about it.

I’m also laser focused on David and Julia despite them being secondary/tertiary characters.  They’re my favorite ship.
