Translation: GRAPH December 2011, Makaze’s History
Translation of the hand-drawn comic in December 2011 GRAPH about Makaze’s history.
Since, as you know if you read my introduction page, I don’t post scans or images, I went with a description of what was happening in each panel followed by the translation.
Yurika * History
Tumultuous laughter?! Our lives…
Guest number 95, Makaze Suzuho
(1. An illustration of baby [literally a baby] Makaze)
Makaze Suzuho
Nickname: Yurika
Hometown: Kumamoto-ken Kikuchi-gun
*Unruly Hair
*Height: 50 cm
*Weight: 3050 grams
*Now has a brother six years younger
When she was born, she had quite a fair complexion and was very slim. But by the time she reached two months, she had become quite fat…
(2. An older lady [grandmother] holding baby Makaze, as Makaze holds onto her scarf surrounded by question marks.)
She was incredibly shy, to the point that if anyone other than her mother held her, she cried… a LOT. In order for her grandmother to hold her…
(An arrow pointing to the grandmother) she would wear the mother’s pajamas as a scarf…
(3. A swimming teacher holding a crying Makaze with a panicked look on their face…)
From 10 months to 2 years old, she participated in baby swimming lessons, but since she wasn’t accustomed to the teacher…
(And arrow pointing to crying Makaze) … she just cried.
(4. A happy Makaze baby using floaties to swim around on her own.)
However, she eventually came to love swimming.
(An arrow pointing to happy Makaze) Practicing happily…
(5. A teacher saying something to a 3 year old Makaze… who is crying [again]. The suffix above her says “GA-N!”)
She entered kindergarten at three years old, but all the kids she had played with from her neighborhood were one year older than her… But as she did not know that, Yurika had gone to school expecting to be in the same class.
Teacher: “The younger class is on the first floor!”
(6. A panicked looking teacher trying to console a, yet again, crying Makaze.)
So from the next day, and every day after that…
Makaze: “Yurika’s going to the older class, too!”
Teacher: “Yurika, this isn’t your classroom!”
(7. Makaze playing happily with two other children.)
Thanks to the consideration of the teacher, Yurika was able to enter the next level class…
(Arrow pointing to Makaze) She was able to spend a happy year with her friends…
(8. A toddler Makaze dancing along with music from a TV.)
Around this time, she became really into dancing around freely making her own choreography.
Her mother was also taking dance lessons at the time, and Yurika came to love dancing.
(9. A happy looking 4 year old Makaze in pigtails)
The now four-year-old Yurika came to understand the system of “kindergarten” and repeated a year in the older class. (Aka, she stayed behind so she’d be in the right year.)
(10. 6 year old Makaze carrying her baby brother on her back, a heart over them. Below that, Makaze and her baby brother are tucked in bed together, and Makaze is reading him a book.)
When she was six years old, her younger brother was born. He was so cute, and Yurika instantly fell in love.
(Arrow to Makaze carrying her brother) She’d give him baths and carry him around…
And sometimes she’d read picture books with him…
(11. Makaze sitting in a tree while two other kids play on the ground.)
She eventually entered the local elementary school. She lived in an area with a lot of mountains and surrounded by nature, so she often ran around the hills and fields like a wild child.
(Arrow pointing to Makaze) Climbing trees, making secret bases, and getting hurt everyday…
(12/13. The top picture, Makaze running down a hill, but her foot hits a rock? The bottom picture, her brother falling, with a panicked Makaze going “GYA!” behind him.)
One day, she was running down a slope with her brother when…
(14 – Makaze on her back, lifting her brother up with her feet. 15 – The brother slips… 16 – Both Makaze and her brother have @_@ faces and bloody noses…)
Another time, she tried lifting her brother up like an airplane…
She just wanted to give her brother a fun time, but there were disastrous results…
(17 A slightly older Makaze happily holding a test marked “100”)
Around this time, she was practicing piano. She also learned how to use an abacus…
She continued to use the abacus till the end of junior high school, and it became her special skill.
(Arrow pointing at Makaze) Because of that, she became good at math…
(18 Makaze talking to another student holding up a table tennis paddle)
Once Yurika had entered junior high school…
Student: “I think I’m going to join the table tennis club. How about Yurika?”
Yurika: “Hm, I guess I’ll join table tennis, too.
(Arrow pointing to Makaze) There wasn’t really anything she wanted to join, so she simply joined the same club as her friend and continued for three years…
(19 A shocked looking Makaze…)
In the fall of her third year of junior high school, she saw a Takarazuka performance for the first time. The Tsukigumi National Tour “ Sarang Ai / Jazz Mania” that came to Kumamoto…
(Makaze’s thought bubbles…) Everyone looks like they’re having a lot of fun…
It’s really gorgeous…
So there’s a world like this…
(20 Makaze and her mother sitting at a table)
Around that time, she also went to see the play “Four Seasons” with her mother. On that day…
Mother: “ ‘Four Seasons’ and ‘Takarazuka’… which did you like?”
(21 Makaze looking thoughtful)
Makaze: “Hm. Takarazuka…?”
Mother: “Why don’t you try entering??”
(Arrow pointing to the paper mother is holding) She found the pamphlet while seeing the show…
By recommendation from her mother, but without much preparation, she took the entrance exam at the end of her third year of junior high.
She passed the first round, but not the second…
(22 Makaze sitting in a theater seat)
After the exam, she went to see the Takarazuka Theater Hanagumi performance of “In the Amber Hued Rain / Cocktail” .
(23 Some faceless siennes dancing)
(Makaze thought bubbles) Even the people on the ends are having fun…
I really want to join…
I want to dance here too!
(24 Makaze looking determined)
(Thought bubble) I’ll try again!
From seeing this performance, a strong will to pass the school entrance exam was born!
(25 Makaze practicing ballet)
Upon entering high school, in preparation for the entrance exam, she began studying ballet and voice lessons (more intensely?)
(26 Makaze dressed in a bakers uniform, holding a pan of bread)
In order to cover the costs of those lessons, around the end of her first year in high school she started a part time job at a bakery.
(Arrow pointing at Makaze) A bread shop inside of a shopping mall
Makaze: “Welcome!”
(27 Makaze standing with another worker and the manager by the register)
There were four girls total working at that bakery. While they were all from different schools, they were all in the same grade.
(Arrow pointing at Makaze) They worked two people to a shift…
(28 Makaze and another worker walking around the bakery)
At night the manager went home, leaving the rest of the affairs to the part timers…
Makaze: “Should we have a time sale today?”
Other: “Yeah, let’s do it!”
(29 Makaze fretting over a plate of bread)
Getting to know people from other schools, learning the connections between all the stores within the shopping mall, everything was fresh and exciting. She had only begun the part time job to help pay for her lessons, but she still learned so many things from the experience.
Makaze: “Why didn’t these sell today I wonder?”
Arrow: She also had to think of reasons like this…
(30 Makaze looking over her shoulder at a large sign)
At the end of her first year in high school, she took the entrance exam again… but on the second round, she failed again.
Thought bubble: “The next chance is my last…”
(31 Makaze talking to a teacher)
During her second year in high school…
Teacher: “It’s almost time for the school dance recital, right?”
Makaze: “Ah, there was one last year, too…”
(32 Determined looking Makaze)
Makaze: Yosh! I’ll do my best this year!!
She thought of the movements, of the theme, and became the centerpiece of the performance…
(33 Makaze talking to different students.)
Makaze: “You’re good at rhythmic gymnastics, right? Let’s make this amazing!”
Makaze: “You’re in the broadcasting club, right? I’d like to ask you to do the music!”
Arrow: She really thought of everything…
That year, Yurika-chan’s theme was chosen to represent the school. They were able to participate in the Kumamoto-ken wide recital, and won a prize!
(34 Makaze holding an award and smiling)
Balancing a parttime job with school life was a very busy time, but she was able to create a very happy school life…
(35 Makaze looking determined)
Then, it was time to take the entrance exam for the third time…
Makaze: “This is my last chance. I’ll just enjoy it!”
(36 Makaze looking confused)
Before beginning the second round…
Makaze: “Ee… There’s a ‘speech’ requirement this year? They didn’t have this before…”
Without even time to think, the second round started…
(37 Makaze looking serious with a big smile 38 Makaze sitting in front of a panel and exuding energy)
Makaze: “Kumamoto has a lot of mountains! And a lot of hills!”
Makaze: “Wild strawberries grow in the fields! It’s a really great place!!”
She said, “Even if it’s only once, please visit sometime!!!” very seriously, while representing Kumamoto…
(38 Current Makaze looking embarrassed as she thinks back)
Makaze: “Everyone else talked about why they wanted to enter the school, or about their special skills… I think I really should have talked about my work for the school recital instead… (laughs)
(39 Makaze standing in the rain behind a lot of umbrellas on the entrance announcement day)
On the day of the results, it was raining very hard. It made a very strong impression…
Makaze: “I can’t see… There’s too many umbrellas…”
(40 Surprised and happy Makaze)
Makaze: “My number’s there!”
(41 Relieved looking Makaze in front of the sign. Current Makaze in front of the image.)
Younger Makaze: “Thank goodness…”
Current Makaze: “Since it was my last chance at the entrance exam, when I found my number, I was really overcome with happiness!”
/Finished.
I’m not going to lie, I got to the third panel where she was crying... and after translating the “crying series” that was her PB interview with Reon... I felt like I was noticing a trend... haha.
If you would like to purchase this volume of GRAPH to see the comic for yourself, here it is on Amazon...
(As an aside, earlier in the same GRAPH is a special on Kurenai’s daily special, with a picture of her crushing Makaze’s face in a hug...)
Sharing the posters from Cinema Square Vol. 42, 2011.12.
The posters is super big, split to three images. I tried to join them as close as possible but of coz there are slight gaps leading to slight mis-alignment. But I still want to share because Aiba's faces cannot be missed ^▽^
