My vote for best one-two punch from last year. Parquet Courts "Master of My Craft / Borrowed Time" from their album Light Up Gold.

I often only think of Vampire Weekend as pretentious Ivy League fellows….because that’s what they are. However, I still haven’t been disappointed by a single album of theirs. Their sound has evolved over the years to a cleaner, more polished piece of ear candy, in my opinion. With the same South African, Paul Simon feel present in their albums, they have added what seems like more concentrated orchestration to some of their newer tracks. They still have that raucous, rampant sound that was present in “A-Punk”, but with more control and a tighter grasp of what they want to accomplish on an album (though their debut was pretty stellar as well). “Taxi Cab” was the best track off of their previous album, Contra, and I think this track off 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City is just as perfect. It’s solidly Vampire Weekend. And that makes me happy.

Um, this has been on REPEAT like forever. Yes, "like forever". We know that Haim's SNL performance was sorta quirky. And it turned people off to them. Try again. Go slow. Give them another chance. The beginning of this song reminds me of the Peter Gabriel song, "Don't Give Up" in its spare use of percussion and rhythm instruments. And like Peter's mournful song, Haim's "Go Slow" builds to a crescendo over the sisters' voices and a drop beat that is more R&B than Alternative. Do yourself a favor and download the CD and ignore your confusion over the SNL performance -- except for the very dramatic facial expressions. (Loved that!)
