During the UK’s general election in 2010, Liam Bryne served as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury in Gordon Brown’s government. Upon leaving his position Byrne had wrote what was meant to be a whimsical letter to his successor: “Dear chief secretary, I'm afraid to tell you there's no money left.”
This unfortunate note which was meant as simply a joke was utilised by David Cameron and his party as a visual prop preceding the 2015 election five years later. Cameron used this letter profusely during the election to persuade the general public to choose the conservative government.
