My Favorite Films of 2015

Here's to upholding a community tradition. I have to confess, 2015 was not an exceptional year for me. I spent more time playing catch up and seeing films I should have seen ages ago instead of getting my butt into the theatre when the independent gems came around. I was definitely short on free time so I have to attach a disclaimer for this year’s list. I missed out on a lot films I wanted to see but I have attached most of them at the bottom. I’m convinced a few of them would have made it on here, had I the time (or pirating skills required to watch a couple). A running theme I noticed after I wrote it, there is an unintentional focus on female-centric films - but #lezbehonest - not a bad thing. I’m excited about the direction independent cinema of 2015 took in featuring more women in leading roles. I’m even more excited with what 2016 will produce. So here you go my lovely Tubmlr followers, late, but still...

My favorite films released in 2015 in no particular order:

1. KNOCK KNOCK, IT’S TIG (DIRS: MICHAEL LAHAIE AND CHRISTOPHER WILCHA)

It’s important to note that Tig Notaro had two documentaries about her released in 2015. This is the better of the two, by a landslide. Tig is a charming and hilarious comic. I’ll admit there is nothing but bias here, I love Tig and her stand-up. Rather than focusing on all the awful devastation after devastation, this fly-on-the-wall observational documentary follows Tig and John on their road-trip through the states; performing stand-up in people homes, yards, lake houses or what have you. It’s intimate and delightful. If you don’t laugh at Tig’s impression of a clown horn, I don’t know what to tell you... except that we can never be friends.

2. SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE (DIR: LESLYE HEADLAND)

Headland directed one of my all time favorite films, Bachelorette, and I couldn’t have asked for a better follow up. Watching this film cut me to my core. It didn’t waste any time trying to bullshit the audience with what you think romance is - it lays down the real talk in the first 10 minutes and doesn’t let up until you’re a crying mess in the theater. I felt like Headland overheard my entire romantic/sexual history and put it on screen. It cut me deep and I loved every minute of it.

3. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (DIR: GEORGE MILLER)

OH MY GOD I loved this movie. I can’t even begin to rant about all the wonderful things. A feminist film at it’s finest. There isn’t even a plot to this film and it’s still the fucking greatest.

4. IT FOLLOWS (DIR: DAVID ROBERT MITCHELL)

I know some people who were hung up on the idea that this film pushes the ideology of slut shaming; I would disagree. This film is indie horror to the max and like any solid horror, it focuses on actual societal anxieties and creates a monster out of it. Here it lies in promiscuity, creates a physical monster, and layers on the tension to create an incredible unsettling horror that’s more fun to watch and less terrifying than it actually is. Not without it’s flaws though. But it’s lead is a lady and features a shell-phone. It made me laugh, it made me jump, it made me want to watch certain parts through my fingers covering my eyes. Definitely one to watch with a group, preferably on a large screen in a dark dark room. A must-watch.

Films I wish I had seen before I wrote this: Dope, Mistress America, Slow West, Diary of a Teenage Girl, Me, Earl and the Dying Girl, True Story, Carol, Inside Out, Straight Outta Compton, The Witch, Creed, Anomalisa, Room, The Lobster... so many more.

Video Games I Finished 2015

Last day of the year so here is the list of games I have finished this year! It’s a shorter list than the past three years I’ve been keeping this list. Only 14 games this year, and quite a few asterisks for this one. This year I decided to write down the date I finished the game so I could see how long between games it took me. Pretty much I consider a game “finished” if I get to a credits screen. Anyway, here’s the list!

A few games were finished with friends. A technical finish means that I DID finish the game, it just might not be a traditional ending.

**AmiiboTap was finished because I had enough Amiibo to unlock all the demos in it.

*Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura was finished by passing the controller around with friends in Story Mode.

With Splatoon I didn’t count the Amiibo challenges as games, of course, but I listed them and when I hit level 20 just for fun.

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX was finished after I unlocked and played every single song and got the credit sequence.
